Hi all

A couple of days ago I persuaded (hypnotised maybe?) myself that the rumoured Canadian prices increases to Pentax lenses might arrive in the UK and ordered a DA* 50-135 from SRS.

The plan is that it will compliment my 18-55 II kit lens for the moment and eventually I will get 2 new lenses to cover focal lengths from ultra-wide (10/12/14mm) up to 50mm, replacing the kit lens.

I have a polarising filter for my kit lens and now need a second for the 50-135. So the question is, do I invest in a filter kit which will work with both lenses now and all 3 later? Or do I buy individual filters?

I've heard that the Cokin system filters are acrylic not glass, I guess that would mean a drop in quality. Also are there any compromises in using a "one-size-fits-all" system?

To be honest I'll only ever be using polarising and neutral density filters.

Any advice gratefully appreciated, thanks!

Hi All

This is slightly off topic but close enough to post in an existing thread.

I finally registered my K20D with Pentax today and received an email stating that I'd receive "an individual special offer from the PENTAX programme" in a few days.

Does anyone know what this special offer is or indeed, if it's likely to arrive. I'm asking because I was planning to buy a lens today but if the special offer is some type of cashback/discount, I'll wait until it arrives.

Thanks in advance.
No body seems to know I have registered twice and nothing yet, 1st time Nov 08 and 28th of this month.
Hi ttk

I was looking for info on a different subject and came across this post at DP Review, literally minutes before you posted:

I apologise up front if this has been covered in a previous thread, but I haven’t noticed it.

A couple of months ago I bought a K20D with DA16-45mm. I bought it from SRS Microsystems - good price, good service. Subsequent to my purchase I noticed a link on the SRS website to register my new equipment. The link took me to http://www.pentax-registry.com, where I duly registered my two new items. A week or so later I received a voucher from Pentax offering me a discount on Pentax lenses and accessories. The offer was for £7 off purchases in the range £70 to £149, or £15 off purchases in the range £150 to £349, or £35 off purchases over £350. In my case, the offer was valid for another purchase from SRS.

When I first phoned SRS about this they hadn’t heard of the scheme before - it seems that it is fairly new. But they were happy for me to use the voucher against the purchase of a DA55-300mm. I also discovered that SRS will give free delivery if you are registered on the Pentax User Forum (www.pentaxuser.co.uk). So I had a DA55-300mm delivered to my door for a net cost of £174 - a pretty good deal, I thought.

As the discount voucher was posted to me from Germany, I wonder whether a similar scheme may operate in mainland Europe.
So that is what should happen ... will have to wait and see if anything happens although the person who posted this seems to have received his discount no problem

Hi Kerrowdown, thanks for the reply. Shall we call the extra buckle thingy a "classic buckle"?!

I know exactly what you mean, I've tried this but when I thread the extra strap through the classic buckle, the strap rolls around on itself (like a jam roll ...!). The strap is so stiff that the roll pushes open the quick release buckle. The only solution I've found is to thread the strap to the exact length I need through the classic buckle and leave the quick release open.

This completely defeats the object of having a quick release buckle so I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong.

I'll post a photo tomorrow which should explain what I'm trying to describe.

Cheers!

There are quite a few bags on the market that look like good designs, but which in practical use are just about useless. The Crumpler bags I have seen are pretty hopeless at keeping water out.

Not quite an answer to your query, but if you want hard wearing sensible designs that work then Billingham produce a whole range. I favour the Hadley design for quick access, portability and waterproof qualities.

Lowepro produce good bags, but I find access is not quick and they don't actually hold much for a given size. The quality is excellent though and I do sometimes use them.
Hi John

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to keep the Crumpler if possible because it can carry all the kit I need, including laptop. I'm planning to add an extra velcro patch to each side of the main flap, at the top, I think this should improve the obvious point where water can enter.

The real problem though is this quick release buckle which "quick releases" while I'm walking.

Hi all

I posted this question in the DPReview orums also, so apologies if anyone is reading this a second time. This thread is a bit old now but relevant, so it seems worthwhile resurrecting it.

I'm an SLR newbie, just purchased a K20D, my first SLR. Last week I found a good deal on a Crumpler Daily 600 bag which arrived on Friday. The bag seems great, right size for traveling, can take a laptop, lots of well thought out space.

But I'm having a real problem with the strap. Not sure if it's me being thick or if there's something I'm missing...

Basically the quick release buckle keeps popping open, usually when I pick up the bag or when I "heft" it on my shoulder while walking. The result is that the excess strap is pulled through the open buckle, the strap therefore gets longer, and the bag either stays on the ground when I'm picking it up or heads rapidly for the ground when I'm walking.

There is a normal type buckle used to fix the strap to the bag but if I pull the excess strap through, it creates a huge roll of strap which itself pushes the quick release buckle open.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
