200 ISO is the "native" ISO for these cameras, so I use that wherever possible. Setting 100 ISO brings electronics into play to adjust the expoosure, so nothing is gained. In practice you should be fine using 200 or 400 ISO.

SR is such a boon that I think this alone justifies the use of the K200D.
I don't think that's right actually John, the K200 uses the same sensor as the K10 so native ISO is 100.

Certainly the noise curve still goes down between 200 and 100 on the review by dpreview http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxk200d/page15.asp

When I first got my K10D I used to take my istDL2 when I needed really high ISO since it can do 3200. However, I found that I preferred the K10D at 1600 with SR to the istDL2 at 3200.

a basic forum costs very little to run, the other forum which I contribute to on a regular basis started out as a technical forum attached to a computer hardware company, but split off from the company and now just sort of poodles along on its own.

As long as you've got a corner of a server to hide on and a few people willing to be mods and admins it can work.

sad to see the printed magazine go though

ooooo freebes for family? Danger Will Robinson!

I see your predicament, be careful not to set a precedent you don't want to have to keep to!

First I used, Dad's MV
First I owned, MZ-7 (18th birthday present)
First I bought, and also my only non-Pentax SLR, Ricoh KR-5 Super II (it has a K mount though)

Having looked up the current panasonic model range, I think the one I saw was a G10, which explains our differing views on the viewfinder. It seems they downgraded the G1s viewfinder for the G10 to save money, I do hope that's not going to become a common trait of entry level cameras!

If you feel you missed opportunities last year by having no long lens, take the 50-200 and use the P70 if you need wider than 40mm.

If you didn't miss anything having no long lens before, what are you going to need it for this time? take the 18-55 and keep the P70 for times when you don't want to use/carry the DSLR at all.

As above, get someone who IS interested in photography and already has a decent camera to take them for her in exchange for a few beers.

There's nothing worse for the first impression of a guesthouse than the advertising shots being taken by someone who clearly has no clue.

If I were in her area I'd happily deploy my K10D and 16-45 for the price of a crate of something Old and Speckled, I'm sure I'm not the only one.

That Bronica must really be something! I can relate to the K20 vs OM-20 comparison, occasionally I look through my ME-F and almost fall in.

Annoyingly I can't remember the model of the Panasonic I looked through, but if I owned that camera I can't imagine using the EVF except under light conditions which made the rear screen unusable. Manual focus would certainly be out of the question.

Now to be fair to EVFs in general, we also looked through an Olympus PEN, and that was worlds apart. Still not a patch on a proper optical finder, but smooth and responsive where the Panasonic was jerky, delayed and pixelated. That I would have considered buying.

I expect and hope that within a couple of years EVFs will be close to equalling a Pentamirror finder, and once they get to that level I doubt we'll see another entry level camera with an optical finder again. I just pray that they get to ACTUALLY as good as an optical finder and not just "yeah, we can sell this".

PS I wouldn't DREAM of pulling your K20 from your cold, dead hands. That would be grounds for some serious haunting!

short answer to the question as asked

Yes.

You can mount ANY lens with a K mount (virtually all Pentax lenses since ~1975),

anything auto-focus will work exactly as designed, if it has an aperture ring, set it to A.

any manual focus lens with an A setting on its aperture ring will work fine as long as you set the aperture ring to A, and of course it will be manual focus.

Anything old enough to lack an A setting can still be used but the process is a little more involved. I wouldn't worry about these for now unless you have some kicking about from a film camera.

The DA 50-200 is fully compatible with (and indeed designed for) the Pentax range of DSLRs. Don't worry about asking silly questions though, we all have to start somewhere.
