A good composition. It's gives a sense of relaxing summer afternoons.
A quick and simple way to darken the background is to add a red filter (R:64 G:0 B:0) of about 20% opacity (I use PSPX2) and then convert to b/w again (don't use Channel Mixer). This should work quite well as well as increasing the contrast.

I've just got back from that location and I have to say that I like the atmosphere that you captured in the image. Dark and moody but keeping a high level of detail. Love it!!:o
