No, I meant f1.8, thus covering the early 55mm f1.8 designs in the statement.

The f1.4 lenses do not have flat field performance at close distances and do not respond well to close up and reversed use.

The f1.4 lenses are better suited to reportage, having higher contrast albeit it at the expense of the finest resolution.
Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought we were talking about 50mm variants.

The best overall performers, and the ones that can be abused the most, will be the f1.8 and f1.7 designs.
f1.8? I'll assume that's a typo and should read "will be the f1.4 and f1.7 designs."

For Pete's (and others) education, 1:1.4 and 1:1.7 will appear on the lens.

Maybe I have given wrong info but this looks like one ??
Completely wrong in almost every respect. It's neither a 55mm or a f1.2 lens. It's a 50mm f2 lens.

Pete, you don't seem to have taken any of my advice seriously. I'm done. I'll leave your education to others.

Cheers,

Neither of these lenses exists. Remember what I said about wrong information = bad information?

You do the work this time and supply accurate information.

All I can say is . . . bravo Pete.

There's loads of data on the web about 'focal length' and 'angle of view'/'field of view'. Just Google those terms, all will be explained.

With these two lenses you select the focal length in the Shake Reduction menu that appears when you first turn on to 50 and 28 (or closest) respectively.

You already have a good 50mm lens, IMHO you don't need a 55mm lens.

The last manual focus series of lens was the A. The first auto focus series was F. Then came FA, DA, and finally DFA.

The 50mm lens you have is a reasonable focal length for portraits but maybe too sharp. Others can advise you better than I.

Yep, I'm confused. Your post above led me to believe that you had a 50mm A series lens.

What did you mean by "I did not notice the A instead of the M on the lens. ? ? ?

Does it have an A setting at one end of the aperture ring, or not? Does the lens have the wording "SMC Pentax-A" or does it read "SMC Pentax-M"? Type it exactly as it appears on the lens and in the same order. As far as I know there is no Pentax lens with the wording Pentax SMC (M) written on it.

Anyway, as long as you now have it working, that's fine.

So you've actually got an SMC Pentax-A series lens with electrical contacts on the rear mount despite replying to John's question in another post that you had an M series lens.

Y'know, wrong information is bad information.

Now go out and take some good pics and show a couple here. I think you will be astounded at the difference in image quality between your 'kit' 18-55mm zoom lens and your new best friend, the 50mm 1:1.7 'old faithful'.

If you are into macro photography buy a reversing adapter. That lens is brilliant when mounted backwards on the camera.

Enjoy,

You must have the exposure mode set to M, manual, nothing else. You set the aperture on the lens, then press the green button to set the shutter speed. The aperture setting in the lcd will always flash - - with this, and all other pre-A series lenses attached.

There is also a menu setting you must change to allow the use of the aperture ring on pre-A series lenses.

This is why I recommended that you buy only A series and newer lenses in my reply to your PM.

You really ought to read the replies to your posts. this is the third time I've given you the same information.

the mirror will raise if you use 2 or 10 sec delay, it raises on pressng the button, but the shot is not taken till the delay expires
Which camera? My K10D and my *istD have 2 and 12 second self timer delays. Mirror lockup only occurs when a 2 second delay is chosen, just as it states in the manual. The mirror does not lock up at the start of the 12 second delay. Or . . . have I missed something?
