Your 1st examples:
The original looks soft, so it'll look worse when magnified (zoomed in).

Your 2nd examples:
Original is crisp and sharp, magnified, you can see well defined jagged edges in various places.

Question: Is your camera set to record in JPG or RAW?

If JPG, you can expect more deteriation when magnified than if shot in RAW.

Well this thread has run alot longer than I thought and I would like to thank everyone for there advice and input. I have read varying reports on the k10, k20 X 10 and X 20 and have decsided to hang a little to see what pentax and Samsung do with any new models in the pipe line or if the price of the k20 or X20 comes down.
Now you have a problem. If you wait for the next model you'll miss out on about 18 months worth of experience, then you'll wonder how the next model will improve upon its predecessor, and end up waiting again.

Of one thing you can be sure. The price of the K20D/GX20 will come down . . . eventually.

. . . hopefully theyll match the £290 ive seen online
If you buy on price alone, buy it for £290. If you don't want a grey import, feel more comfortable with a UK warranty, and value SRS's after sales service . . . you'll know where to buy.

Regards,

If you can find a new K10D body for £450, you'd be well advised to buy it. If not, you can have mine for £469.00 + postage.

Your experience brings to mind the famous phrase:- "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is".

Save a bit longer and get a Pentax or Metz flash. You know it makes sense . . . now.

Hi Dan, and welcome.

I don't know the Sigma flash but it sounds like you have the EF500 set to 'dumb' slave mode and it's probably firing from the on-board flash's pre-flash. When the shutter opens, the on-board should fire again, and the Sigma flash should also fire again to make the exposure.

The Pentax AF360/540FGZ's have 2 slave modes, dumb & wireless. I suspect the Sigma is the same, you just need to read the manual to learn how to change it.

If you place the Sigma such that you can see it in the viewfinder, take the shot, and you'll probably see the Sigma fire through the viewfinder. You should not be able to see it fire if it's in wireless slave mode.

I’ve used a polariser quite a lot on my film SLR, so I’d been wondering whether I should get one. I must admit, though, I was used to a linear polariser, which obviously gives more control. They’re not meant to work with digital, although some people say they’ve not had problems. I suspect I’d be better off trying a circular one before I buy somehow.
Robert.
The difference between linear & circular polarizers has nothing to do with digital SLR's. Circular polarizers can 'confuse' some AF systems, film or digital. I've never had a problem, except that I noticed some 'ghosting' in some shots I took at the weekend using a Sigma EX DG 180mm Macro lens and a CP filter. That's probably more to do with light reflections between glass surfaces more than anything else.

It's less probable that you'll use coloured filters of any kind, except maybe Graduated Neutral Density (ND Grads) filters...
A coloured neutral filter? Where can I get one of those?

Dan
OK, OK, I was trying to differentiate between plain/grad filters and effect filters like starburst etc.
