I got a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for a trip to China.

It doesn't purport to be Macro but it focusses down to 28cm(?), I love the photos taken with it and the constant f/2.8 minimum aperature came in very handy on many an occasion.

People say it is "well built" and compared to other digital lenses it certainly is, but don't compare it with the old metal lovelies.

I'm also going back to College (FE) this year - my photography course starts on Monday (part-time). This may be the first time in my life I've been excited about 'education'.

If it helps, I don't mind delivering any protestations in person - I work 10 minutes from their HQ/service centre.

They were like that with my Pentax ME Super.

I paid them the £60 to get it fixed (shutter speed) and serviced.

I then waited, and waited and waited. Two months later I rang up and they said it was going into the workshop.

I received it a few days later in the post (which maddened me as I'd rung up three times to ensure they would ring me and I'd pick it up rather than chance it getting lost in the post). The camera had dust inside and hadn't been fixed even though the form said it had been fixed and serviced/cleaned.

Back it went (although they didn't apologise or explain why it wasn't fixed). Three months later and many phone calls later I went to pick it up and it was as I'd given it to them. Again, no apologies - just a note saying "part no longer available".

Two months after that I got a cheque for my £60.

Funny thing is the camera was taken to an old camera repair bloke in Spain early this year who fixed/serviced it in a few hours and charged ~£20!

I think it's a problem with the older stuff - the techies havn't got the skills/inclination to diagnose problems, they'll just diagnose using a chart and swap out anything that's not working (in my opinion).

I'm sure someone here recommended a repairman who also advertises on eBay.

I'd like to take some high-speed film to a beer festival at the end of April (Reading). I took my Canon G5 last year and that should have anything above ISO 100 removed as an option (I hate using flash).

So, this year I'll be taking my ME Super or Centon K200, a 50mm/1.7 lens and some film.

I'm actually completely undecided, so it could be Delta 3200 or Neopan 1600 B/W or maybe 800/1600 speed Fuji C41 film.

The venue is a large main tent with lighting the type of which I cannot remember. I'll be scanning in all the film so colour can be corrected once that is done.
