From the Horses mouth...
January:
Chris@SRSWATFORD...
Hi everyone,

I have some special prices on the following Sigma lenses. All have 3 year warranty and include postage to mainland UK for forum members.

Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 - £339
Sigma 150-500/5-6.3 HSM OS - £639
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 OS - £275

The savings are potentially large as some Sigma lenses went up in price on January 1st. Once this stock has been exhausted, the 150-500mm will sell for approximately £830ish..

Febuary:
Still available:

Sigma 150-500mm f5.6-6.3 DG OS HSM - £595

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 OS - £275

Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC - £339

Soon would be my guess...

Tamron 70-300 macro is a good first zoom for around £80 used. It does suffer from purple fringing in high contrast, easily corrected in PS if you need to.

DA 55-300 is a great step up for another £120, they usually go for around £200 used. I would advise the DA rather than the DAL, the loss of quickshift and hood does make a difference.

If you have £600 srs are currently selling the 150-500mm OS HSM zoom, this is a fantastic lens at a very good price, TBH it would be worth going overdrawn to get this now.See threads in the forum for example images.

Agreed! Again...
The 150-500 is going up to around £830! Get one now if you can, this would give you all the Lens you would require for some time to come. Expensive? Not really when you realise how much Lens youre getting...

I have been looking for reviews or tips on what lens to get for my Pentax K10D. I currently only have a 18-55mm and thats fine for people/groups or scenic pics but I love to shoot wildlife and of course the 18-55 just doesn't get me close enough. I won my K10D in a photo comp using my Lumix. My Lumix has up to a 12x optical & 48x digital zoom built in. Of course I was spoilt with the Lumix lens, the quality was never that good zoomed right in on the Kestrels hovering above me but at least I could zoom in. So I now search for a lens that can get me in close with the wildlife but won't break the bank. Any ideas guys?

Probably the best value new would be a Pentax 55-300mm (DA or DA L, the DA L lacks quickshift, has a plastic lens mount and doesn't come with a hood but is optically identical).
Second vote but for the DA 55-300, As the quickshift may come in useful for critters so the screwdrive noise doesn't put em off all the time...

I have the 50-135 and do a lot of portraits, both available light and studio.
I also have a 55mm (not a DA but an F1.8 M model)
Yes the 55 is a nice length but it is limited in its application, but gives you that shallow DOF (also it may give you the effective FOV of an 83mm, but it is still a 55mm lens and will act as such)
Personally, I would go for the 50-135 as it is a lot more versatile and it is'nt a compromise. In fact I would go to say it is the finest Portrait zoom out there.
Agreed! I seem to be agreeing with a lot of people today
Like I say though I am a bit biased currently toward the 50-135...

Don't forget that the DOF (which gives you the subject isolation you desire) will get smaller the longer your lens.

So for a subject 10 feet away, the 55mm @ f1.4 will give you a DOF of 0.56 feet.

For the same subject 10 feet away, a 100mm lens @ f2.8 will give you a DOF of 0.33 feet.

You could also save a fair bit of cash by looking at the Sigma 50-150 f2.8.
Seconded, get one while you can, the new one won't be four hundred quid!

If you plan portraiture in a studio (Controlled) setting I'd say go 55 F1.4 but you have already answered your own question because you say you want versatility, Which means the 50-135 gets the nod? They are both different lenses of course but if you can afford the 50-135 now I'd say get it! The 55mm is cheaper and you could pick one of those up later for shots that must have F1.4? There are shots that must have F1.4 (When you can't foot zoom or get better seperation using distance with the 50-135), that said I feel that you will manage 95% of the time with the 50-135, I am however biased because I've just bought Davex's...

This Lens intrigues me and I want to explore its possibilities in the future. My question is
Does this Lens get old quick, does the effect wear off and what is it like for Lanscapes?
Does it de_fish ok? Ok that's three questions...
