Nearly always - just one, in the same place each time, though strangely it's not there on about 10% of my shots. But, in the main it's there always, whether shooting RAW or JPEG.

By the way, thanks for the quick reply.

As a newcomer to the world of digital capture I'm wondering how common hot pixels are, & how much of a problem they're seen as? I ask as I've noticed one on my K100D, & I don't know whether it's worth getting the camera replaced, or if it's a problem I'm likely to encounter again on the replacement camera?

Not a K10D review, for anyone who misread this, but a pretty favourable & in-depth review of the K100D.

Hi there,

I've recently bought my first DSLR, the K100D. I've not had too much of a chance to do anything with it yet, beyond playing & setting up the custom functions. It doesn't feel quite as nice in the hand as my Z-1p, especially with larger lenses, & getting used to the viewfinder will take a while, but it seems like a nice little camera, & I can't wait to try it out with various lenses.

Anyhow, while I'm fine with most aspects of the image editing process (having scanned & photoshopped many rolls of film) I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to the basics of digital. I'd appreciate any basic advice that anyone can give me - think back to when you first went digital & think of what you'd have been grateful to have been told!

My first basic queries are these:

-How often do I need to format the card & is that best done in-camera?

-To transfer images to the computer using a card reader do I simply copy the images across into a new folder? Or can I do this from within an image editing program?

Sorry these are pretty uninteresting questions, but it's specifically these bits of digital photography I'm new to, & I want to make sure that I start off with good habits. I will be mainly shooting RAW, once I get sorted out with a RAW converter...

Thanks for any advice,

Jonathan

Thanks a lot for the replies, which have been really useful. Thanks especially for the link, Matt - that was just the information I needed to know.

Hi there,

Just a couple of quick questions on the K100D (one of which I'm hoping to get hold of this week!)

Both questions relate to the speed at which it transfers files from the buffer to the card (I've read a review that said the camera is not the fastest in this respect). I'll be using it to take pictures of a series of short plays, & expect to be taking about 100 or so RAW files for every 8 minute play. Is the camera likely to lock up & stop me shooting while it clears the buffer at any point, and if so is this going to be for a negligible amount of time (say, 2-3 seconds) or for much longer than this (which could be frustrating)? I'll either be using Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III cards - on the same subject, will I notice much difference in speed between the two?

I appreciate that not many people have this camera yet, but would be grateful for performance information on other Pentax DSLRs, just to give me an indication of what to expect.

Many thanks for any help,

Jonathan

As SMC says, first of all make sure the ISO setting is the same on the camera & on the flash. Set one of the two auto settings on the front of the flash then set the corresponding aperture on the lens (I usually close the lens aperture about a third of a stop). I don't have the flash here with me, but I think you also need to ensure the switch on the back is not on TTL.

I usually use manual mode with a shutter speed of 1/160thsec, though you can use a slower speed to balance the flash exposure with the ambient light.

Hope this helps,

Jonathan

I often use the AF280T on auto with a K100D, & find I get good results with the aperture closed either a third or half a stop below the setting on the flash. Another plus with this flashgun is that it will do swivel as well as bounce flash.

Thanks for your help anyway, Peter. It's nice to have confirmation that 11v will be fine for a Pentax digital.
