Review here

Think I pretty much agree with it.

By 300mm, this lens delivers poor image quality across the frame (except on the far left side of the frame). Stopping down at 300mm helps, but even f/11 image quality is only marginal. If you consider this a 70-200mm lens, you will be more happy than if you are counting on getting great 300mm image quality.
Sounds like they had a less than stellar sample, with a pronounced centering defect which is quite common in IS/VR/VC lenses due to the floating element group. Something that the Sony/Pentax variant without VC could/should be completely free of. The only way I'll ever know is to try one for myself in Pentax fit please

Surprising considering the amount of positive reviews it's getting Mike:

http://photo.net/equipment/tamron/70-300di-vc/

"The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC is surprisingly good optically. It is merely a little bit less sharp compared to my Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S, stopped down to f/5.6."

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/tamron-sp70-300mm-f-4-5-6-di-vc-usd-interchang...

"This new telephoto optic from Tamron has proven itself to be very capable indeed. It is capable of producing images with very good resolution across the image area at all focal lengths and optical aberrations such as colour fringing and distortions are kept well within acceptable thresholds."

I have one it's a fine lens, has the "A" setting on the aperture ring so works really well on Pentax, solid build, bargain price.

Just ordered one for the 50D as it's the last day of the £30 cashback.

Will let you know what it's like when it arrives.
Congratulations Mike, looking forward to hearing your opinion and perhaps seeing a few sample images, although the mods probably won't allow it

I'm 100% certain that the DA*300 is capable of much better shots than the 55-300, but don't underestimate the sharpness that the zoom is capable of. Use it at around F8 with high-ish shutter speeds and you will be surprised just how good it is.

On your woodpecker shots, the only conclusive element is the colour rendition which is better on the DA*300.

David
Same here, I'd be willing to wager the DA*300 @ f/4 would match the resolution of the zoom @ f/8 and the colour rendering does appear much better wuth the DA*300.

You are of course quite right John! I should have gone for a much higher ISO - I have yet to come to terms with the noise suppression abilities of the K5...

Roger
Hi Roger, noise suppression shouldn't really be an issue if you're shooting RAW as it can be applied in PP. I also notice the focal length of the 55-300 was set at 230mm which is short of the maximum and is likely to give a better result although I don't have a DA 55-300 to test the theory.

I have posted a couple of self-explanatory shots of a woodpecker. I still think it reasonable to say the 300* is 'a bit' sharper than the 55-300 (at that range).
Both images have motion blur which would render the test inconclusive IMHO.

1. A DA*500mm f/4 with the same quality as the DA*300.
2. DA* 1.4x/1,7x SDM rear converter.
3. A DA 70-300 f/4-5.6 SDM with performance to match the Tamron 70-300 Di USD, with similar build to the DA 17-70.
