The Sigma 400 prime? probably better at the edge of frame not sure about the centre, the DA*300 + 1.5x seems reasonably good to me. The kingfisher was 100% crop from the centre. The thing is I'd lose SDM and quick shift with the old APO Tele Macro The new Sigma 120-400 OS HSM is very interesting, but I doubt the optical quality matches the prime (could be wrong, it's a much newer design) but I'd get OS to replace ineffective SR and keep HSM with full time manual focusJohn,

All the TC's I have are probably made by Teleplus in reality, the Tamron 1.4x does show less magnification than the Teleplus 1.5x, I've tested all 3 TC's. The 1.7x is also a teleplus and labeled such, the 1.5 says Teleplus (Kenko). All the TC's work with SDM but hunt a little, sorted with a tweak in quick shift, hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm currently thinking about the new 120-400 with OS, released today apparently, it also has HSM of course. Sounds very nice, I wish someone would review one soon. SRS has listed one on the Bay @ £615

HiThanks for your advice so far. My digi only has the crappy in-built flash, that's why i was gonna use t'other cameras. I don't wanna spend all my hard earned on a dedicated speedlight just yet. could I not use a sensor to trigger my old sunpak. I remember Jessops used to do like a little block sensor with a lead. It was triggered by flash. Or even some sort of hotshoe pc adapter?

I'd suggest the best flash you can afford with diffuser, a spare one as backup and a power pack. If you haven't got the power pack the re-charge time will be far too long and you'll miss shots. I'm no wedding photographer but have to do group shots quite often, controlling the subjects is a nightmare

I'd agree in general but the Sigma 10-20 is one of the best corrected zooms I've ever used, the test makes an interesting read IMHO. There is a little distortion right at the edge at 10mm but it has an ubusual characteristic, I simply shoot at 12mm or crop the very edge if it's noticeable. Personally I shoot almost exclusively with primes 24 -300+mm, but the Sigma 10-20 covers the Ultra-wide end for me perfectly, just a metter of opinion of course.Pretty much all zooms have distortion of some sort, usually much worse than prime lenses, most zooms are quite bad, even some of the so-called renowned zooms like the Canon L 24-105mm have bad distortion, this lens is highly regarded by many, but others cannot stand it.

Despite the technological advances (HSM and OS) how would the optical quality be compared to the older Sigma 400 APO Tele Macro you have for sale?
