I've recently seen a pretty convincing review of this AI noise reduction by some of the astrophotography folks on youtube in the context of nebula shots. The results look extremely good but close analysis seems to reveal the AI actually adding detail rather than just cleaning up the image or sharpening what is there - perhaps a distinction more import for scientific or record shots than purely artistic use.

Thanks, that's helpful but (although we can always spend more for better quality gear ) I think that to start with I'd like something easy to use and really portable, and I do also want the o-gps units location tagging of images. Besides, half the point is dropping a print on my hi-tech canon shooting colleagues desk saying ' just done with the camera and a forty year old bit of manual focus glass' as I walk away with a big grin (again).I'd get a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini, that's 50 quid more than a O-GPS2. If you want to spend 100 quid more, then get a Star Adventurer 2i Pro Pack (this is the one I have). It is far more capable and it can also be used to create time lapse images.

I'm looking to try a bit of astro photography using a KP and one of the gps units (based in UK /Northern Hemishere). It is said in the advertising bumf that the gps2 is more 'accurate' possibly due to picking up Galileo and Glonass satelites but does anyone know if that is actually the case and whether that translates to better/easier astrotracer images?

Yes luminosity masks are great - I used a combined drawn and luminosity mask in my edit. Not with PS but with darktable that has luminosity masks on steroids - you can run a full parametric mask on luminosity/rgb colours/lab components etc.Have you guys looked into luminosity masks in Photoshop?
It's an interesting field where you select based on brightness, rather than by area colour etc. By all accounts that seems the best way to approach an HDR like edit, from a single shot, without the usual horrible HDR outputs.
This scene potentially could benefit from that type of approach also.
This guy is awesome, in my humble opinion as they say.

Just went through the exact same thing with photos from the kids cross country sports run, which needed more ISO and less shutter speed to catch the kids.

Shake Reduction allows you to hold the camera for longer shutter times, but it doesn't stop objects moving in the frame during that period.
These don't seem to be shake related problems to be honest, but more a consequence of having too long a shutter speed for the speed of the action in the frame. 1/200 of second would be more suitable for instance, and higher still if you want to ensure there is no movement blur. You'll need a faster lens, or a higher ISO to achieve this.

And a quick play from me just from the original jpeg posted not the raw. Nothing but a masked exposure increase and some warming and the contrast softened. Perhaps too softened but its an alternative view as I found I didn't like the strong contrast most folks have gone for.
