If you want some landscape shots of the city in its entirety, there are a number of good viewpoints (it is built on seven hills after all!). Calton hill and arthur’s Seat are the obvious ones but there are also good panoramic views from Blackford Hill. Though it’s a bit out of the centre, it’s barely much of a climb and you’re away from the crowds. Other than that, ducking in and out the closes off the royal mile can give some interesting light and shadow and some unusual perspectives on the usual sights. Enjoy!

For those in the Edinburgh area, there's a guy selling one of these custom made by thebokehfactory for £150 on gumtree. I've never seen the like. Was put on late last night so may still be available.

Sounds about right. Doesn't appear anything visually amiss so may well be down to some electronic jiggery pokery as you suggest. Got for much cheapness so definitely not worth the repair. Oh well....
