Just a reminder that there is only one week left to enter my monthly "Food" competition.

So far there are only 3 entries and while having so few entries will make judging easier I would much rather see a few more. So if you can please think about having a go.

For the competition I am open to a broad interpretation and food can obviously be anything from ingredients, including stuff that is still growing or packaged, through to preparation, presentation and consumption.

The usual monthly competition rules apply. Entries must be shot during the month of the competition, July 2020, using a Pentax or the re-badged Samsung equivalent cameras.

The competition closes at midnight BST on Friday 31st July.

Lovely early morning sunshine in our garden this morning so I have had a go with the D-FA* 70-200 to try and capture the leaves emerging from buds on a Horse Chestnut tree over the fence. Not completely happy with the results but I think it was a useful exercise:




And from the top of the tree some sticky buds (Heavily cropped):




While I was in the garden I did a quick lens swap and took a shot of the inside of the greenhouse using a D-FA 15-30. The greenhouse is in a sort of transitional state between risk of frost and preparing for summer:

Just a reminder that today is your last chance to enter my weekly "Heritage" competition.

So far, while there is only 7 entries, they do cover a fantastic range of interpretations although I was expecting to see more examples of old forms of transport and possibly other museum artefacts.

While having so few entries will make judging easier I would much rather see a few more entries so feel free to raid your archives and have a go.

David - Many thanks for the info about the steam on setting off. The loco had indeed been standing for a while. Our station is the last before the junction that gives access to the main line at Peterborough and the train crew was changing over to the one taking it onto the main line. While I have previously photographed trains before they have ususally been running at speed. It is only in the last yaer that we mave moved to Peterborough and have been so close to a very active preserved railway. I got caught out by a cloud of steam in October by the Flying Scotsman doing a similar crew change.

We live close to the Nene Valley Railway and last month went along to our nearest station, Orton Mere, to see a Black 5 loco on its way back to the East Lancashire Railway having been on loan to the Nene Valley.

I have found from experience that when these locos pull away they can produce a huge amount of steam that swallows everything up particularly any photographer who is too close. So having shot the stationary loco I rushed to the very end of the platform to hopefully capture it emerging from a cloud of steam.

In colour the results did not look particularly impressive so I decided to convert them to black and white using Google Nik in PSE14. I did some experimentation in Google Nik and although I have possibly overcooked them here are my favourite of the results:










And finally, with only a single support coach to pull, it managed to get up to some speed:




These were all using a Pentax K-1 with a HD PENTAX-D FA 24-70mm F2.8ED SDM WR.
