Just messing about with my K-5 @ ISO 12800, Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO (@250mm) with a 2x teleconverter (Teleplus MC7 KAX) handheld at 1/15 sec. (fairly well braced).

The EXIF indicates 600mm as this is what I set (the converter is only a 6 contact KA). I've done nothing to the raw image apart from reduce the vertical size to 800 pixels.

It doesn't look sharp to me, was this the last bottle

To be honest I think more people will be impressed with the ISO performance, that's really good for 12800.

It may not be tack sharp but I would like to see anyone shoot as good @ 500mm 1/15th without IS of some description.

As Mike said, 1/15 @ 600mm is impressive (with or without IS) !

Impressive indeed.

SR can be seen to be working while looking through Live view. just switch it off and you'll immediately see the difference.

the only caveat with SR is the time it takes to kick in.

Thanks for the comments. There are a few variables which are likely to affect the sharpness. The lens isn't a top quality zoom, the teleconverter will reduce the quality and the high ISO doesn't help.

I decided to have another go, this time with a Tamron 500mm f/8 mirror, again at 1/15th handheld (well braced) at ISO 12800:
