Although I use a Metz 50 I have actually found diffusing the on-camera flash gives great results for shots for individuals / small groups within 1 -3 yards if you have no bounce option.

Thanks very much for your additional comments, folks.

I gather the Tamron 90 is a very good lens, but the DFA 100 has the advantage of being 1:1 rather than 1:2, does it not?
Not just a 'very good lense' an absolutely outstanding lense. Many of the very best macro shooters around use the Tamron (the Sigma, Tamron & Pentax are all superb). The Tamron under discussion (current version), Sigma 105 and the Pentax are all 1:1. That is the definition of a true 'macro' lense. However unfortunately manufacturers have now taken to marketing anything under 1:4 as having a 'macro' function

You could buy any of those macro lenses (you said you don't need WR) and be very happy with your purchase. They are all superb.

Taking my K20 to a local charity fight night...need some advice

Plan to use my 77mm wide in TAV mode. As regards focus, should I go manual or AF-C?

Also have a manual pentax 55mm/1.8 if shorter with manual focus is the way to go?

Have a sigma EF-530 flash if required
If the AF-C can not handle the continuous movement then try AF-S and pre-focus (there may also be times when they are not moving too much anyway and a single focus lock is enough). If you want to speed up AF then assign AF to the AF button not the shutter - you do have to get used to focusing with the AF button and firing with the shutter though, so practice this in advance in you decide to use it !

These are really nice. Walk the Path and These Logs are particularly atmospheric. I like the PP treatment, really brings out the tangled detail, although I can't make up my mind whether I like the way OOF areas are posterised in the background. The colour toning is effective though.
Ditto Pentaxophile's words exactly.

Lovely.

Thanks Alan !

Thank you Mark - I have some with the ramp as well but my intention was to make it seem the athletes were as high as possible, giving them some perspective by posing them adjacent to the two highest objects in view - the building under construction and the floodlights (rather than just clean air as in other shots) I hope I achieved that.

Thank you for those very kinds words Mat. !

Thanks Stuey - I'm very pleased you enjoyed them !

Thank you Don. !
