How come people who don't vote can't get to see the poll voting on PU without logging off ? This is very frustrating and could lead to spurious votes (someone even admitted as much on another poll recently) as people may not have anything to contribute (I've not used either of these lenses - though held the Pentax 17-70 yesterday - I was surprised at how heavy it is) but would like to see the general opinion and therefore the quickest way to do so (and let's be honest, many people would do this rather than take the time to log off/in again).
There should be a button next to the poll to see the results, for everyone not just non-members !

Must admit Frogfish, didn't notice that! Moments earlier he was leaning (scratching) against the tree, so perhaps he was leaning forward!
Hi Bill, the lens was the F*250-600mm and the camera was set at F8. Don't use a converter that often so I guess in effect it was F16?
It is a 35mm 600, so doubled with a 1.5x crop is 'effectively' 1800mm ! Would like to try it with a Q as that has a 5.5x crop factor, that could be fun!
3,300mm at f8 or with a x2 TC 6,600mm at f16 ... insane !

As for flash ... well you will get far more keepers and sometimes it is the ONLY way to get the shot. All the best macro shooters use flash.
There is a time and a place both for tripods and flash and you will be limiting your opportunities to deny either a place in your macro kit.
Also for the OP - I also wouldn't believe the stories that AF is useless in macro. It's not. With skittish subjects I often use AF and it works just as well (sometimes better) than MF. That said overall I generally use MF more.

#1 - pose looks really awkward and her face is out of focus.
#2 - watch the highlights !
#3 - nice pose, great model, but ... what on earth is going on there ?! Did you shoot this through a scratched lens or car window ? Really doesn't work IMHO.

I'm not sure all the best macro shooters use flash. However, all the best macro shooters who use flash do so in a very skilled way indeed. Managing the reflections from the shiny surface of bugs and balancing subject and background lighting is hugely difficult and more so the closer you go. It's a personal preference but I just don't like macro shots where the use of flash is obvious.
It's illogical to think that any of the top macro shooters would deliberately seriously handicap themselves. Some of them even go out of their way to show you their flash set-ups (some of them quite brilliant). Since macro is all about getting close, usually using f8 and up, and most often at speeds of over 1/100 (or usually at 1/180 or 1/250, both flash sync speeds) then a flash is more often than not a necessity. However the skill is all in the diffusing so that the reflections you mention are rarely noticeable in their work.
BTW I do agree with you in general, in all my photography (except macro ) I prefer ambient lighting wherever possible.
