kit always matters, it always has, every photographer has been affected by the kit they use, check Diane Arbus, early stuff and late stuff - her style of photography was greatly improved by the camera she used. Look at Bill Brandt, made a fortune and created some fabulous nude shots because he switched to a camera with a wide lens

we learn all about these people at college, and study the differences they have achieved with different cameras, kit, lenses and more

now-a-days is no different, in order to fufil your potential, you need to find the kit that is best for you, i have decided Pentax is not best for me, mostly because they just dont produce the range and quality of lenses that i require for my work, and what i hope my work can become

i in NO respect feel i am as far as i need to go with photography, i am only at the beginning of my journey, but i want to learn with my kit... Nikon offers me both a brilliant system now and the option to move on in future

Plus a range of uber quality and beautiful lenses to boot

and i am not unhappy to discuss my choice, or anyone elses perspectives on it, certain members have made me feel a bit uncomfortable as they are clearly out to 'Have a go' rather than actually offer anything constructive one way or the other

Oh i am very sure dont worry about that - i didnt feel the need to tell the world but my For Sale thread was a bit derailed and whereas i didnt want that to happen, i also didnt want for people to not have their say so to speak.

I dont use metz in the studio - i use my metz for On-location shoots, which i do at festivals, in fields etc - it would be wonderful to have the time and means to have a full Elinchrom Ranger set but that will have to wait a while i think

Another thing, i went into the studio with my Pentax K20D, did a light reading, set everything up and yet the pictures came back over exposed ;( not what i expect when using a light meter! i think Pentax have some kinks to work out there!

We will have to agree to disagree on the lenses issue, i dont feel Pentax have produced the quality of lenses i require to continue with them. Its all about the lenses after all

My PP does need techincal work, just as my photography requires work - this is why when people have approached me to do fashion shoots or weddings for them, i have told them - i will do this and i will recieve payment for it, but you are getting a bargain because i am not at a stage yet where i can promise you every shot you want.

Its a compromise on my part, and on theirs - next year when i have another bunch of weddings/fashion shoots and the like under my belt, i will be able to charge more but until i am sure of the service i am giving, i could not charge the maximum, it just wouldnt be fair

I wouldnt use a Metz in the studio, we have access to far far more suitable studio flash than that, hopefully by the time i leave college and its fabulous kit behind, i will be more sure on what kit i require for my own studio, and build it up that way

i suppose the real clincher is... had i been a victim of peer pressure, would i have bought a pentax in the first place? the answer is 'no' many more people suggesting i go for Canon and a few suggesting Nikon, as it is i did what i always do, check the specs of the camera look at side by side reviews, debate, deliberate and be absolutely sure

which is why i ended up with a K10D all those years ago, because it was the best in its class, price wise, specs wise and also for general robust-ness

Now i am looking to upgrade, i did exactly the same thing, checked out the cameras i could afford, what their pro's were, what their cons were and i established the camera that was best for me

This was not peer pressure because frankly, my peers dont bother trying to pressure me into anything!

This has been totally my descion, for better or for worse

and anyway, the body of the camera is little to do with the pictures it produces, its the variety of Nikon lenses i am looking forward to getting my teeth into. 70-200mm at f2.8 mmmmm good - plus some of the wide lenses take my breath away

The body is little more than a carrier, i have checked the specs of the Nikon sensor and it looks lush, but the lenses are the real clincher!

of course you meant to offend Nathan, if offence was off your list you would not be so damn inconsiderate of other peoples feelings!

Nobody is bullying me about my choice of Pentax, nor forcing my hand to move to Nikon (seriously how did you get that from my posts?)

You have failed to provide any worthy argument, treating me as if i have no talent, no common sense and also ignored all of the points i have brought up about why i am moving

its not your money i am spending, nor is it your kit i am changing so i suggest you step down and stop getting so wound up! Its okay for people to change systems and do what they feel its best - its fine for other people to have a different point of view to you.

I will charge what i want for a days work, again, this doesnt effect you, shouldnt bother you and certainly doesnt give you the right to be such a meany

I will step away from this debate now as i cant handle this trollish attitude

Nathan, you should be ashamed and i think perhaps spend some more time on your people skills as both are needed to be a good photographer.

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments, sorry to the grumpy boys, but you all have one thing very wrong (well i think many things actually) but one i know for sure - i have felt Very proud and Very confident wearing my Pentax, i have felt sure of my work and totally totally confident doing shoots for people,

As for me being unsure of the equipment, ALL my fashion shots were taken with my Pentax and my Metz hammerhead... I have worked Really hard to get them perfect and by that i mean i am comfortable working with the variables, which is the most important thing.

issues with pentax have been - when working in a studio, with a light metre, studio flash and sync lead... the Pentax has blown out images taken with the reading from the light meter! I cant work like that its just not good for my course frankly...

The slow sync speed - from what i can gather from metz, the methods of using my hammerhead are much much better with Nikon, and as its all about the lighting (IMHO) thats what i am going for.

Thats really whats done it for me, the difference in flash sync and also the performance in low light. I have to get certain images and i am finding that hard with the Pentax.

And maybe i dont know my camera 'really' well - maybe i will never know a camera to the extent that people on her talk about, but i work with lighting mostly, i have done a LITTLE work on studio lighting because last year at uni was immense and i didnt have a great deal of time to play around with stuff. But On Location lighting i have sorted out!

Of course i am modest! Jesus have you SEEN some of the work people produce claiming to be professional! You get alot of people that dont bother learning their art, i have studying for one year and i am lightyears ahead of them... Not that i am the best, it takes a lifetime to master photography and i am happy to give my life to it, but frankly ANY study is better than picking up a DSLR and thinking you are amazing without even questioning or learning the skill that you have.

Photography is about learning and as far as i am concerned i have the next 2 years to get myself to a fully professional standard - having felt drawbacks with the Pentax already - i am sure i am making the right choice

however i have been talking with Ian my tutor and he is VERY impressed with the Pentax as a study camera, they are much much bulkier with better specs than the nikons used at the moment so they might think about approaching Pentax for some kit (which is ace)

thats the other thing... College is all Nikon based so if i have a nikon i have much more access to equipment from there.

yerp there are many reasons bit bored of listing them now though, Pentax are a great brand and perfect for the market they are going for. just not so good for pros

Sorry, Feeb, but I'm rather bored with people boasting about moving to another brand. Especially when they would do better to work on their own skills.

You can take snapshots with any brand of camera, so I don't suppose you will be any worse off, except financially.

G
How is it POSSIBLY boasting! sorry i think you have me all wrong, i just didnt want my sales thread derailed so i started this one.

i would never boast about moving from pentax, its been a huge and slightly heartbreaking decision for me (my first real camera was a k1000) but i am sorry if i have upset anyone... people just seemed interested in why thats all

I REALLY don't think that any other system is going to improve on 99% of your photography. I have looked at your site, and the only thing that I can say is that you haven't learnt to use your pentax camera well enough to produce the results that you aim at. ,
Well thats for me to find out isnt it If you are really suggesting that the images i have produced in my portfolio are lacking, we are going to have to agree to disagree - i am immensly proud of the work i have done this year and i think that for my first year working 'as a photographer' rather than it being a documentary style hobby... i have done very very well.

I think that before you spend thousends of pounds on a camera and lens, you should really master Lighting, on-location lighting, flash, metering, composition, model posing, and a whole lot of other aspects of photography that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the system you are using. ,
I am going to university to learn about these things and many other things, i am Very comfortable with On-location lighting and i am improving every day in a million different ways. Pointless loving outdoor flash with a camera that only has a sync speed of 180 though isnt it? just that simple change will be a huge asset to my photographing style.

What I am trying to say is that there can be situations where a specific camera system will be required to achieve the best possible results (like FPS for sports photogs or large format for landscape photogs) but the type of photography that you do, is definitely not one of these.,
And what type of photography do i do? i do lots of different stuff... which is why i need a camera that performs better in certain situations. Like low lighting, quick movement and more clarity on images, i get paid between 150-500quid a day for wedding at the moment, if i could be assured that i could get all the images i needed regardles of the situation, then i could charge 500quid all the time. As it is, my pentax performs badly in low light and even on a tripod finds it hard to focus in low light.

Look at the PPG for examples of IQ from pentax cameras, and you will soon realise that it is really a matter of practice, learning, imagination, learning, practice, learning. I have recently understood that after a few years making money from photography, I am still light years away from mastering the system I use (or any other system) and the PP side of things. WIth this, I am also VERY CONFIDENT about my work, but unlike you, I know that another camera won't give me better results. ,
Photography has Always been a matter of learning your kit, in order to achieve good results in whatever you are trying to do. Photography is about mathmatics of light, being able to make equasions and decisions which will allow you to get the same shots regardless of the variables.

I am very confident about my work too - hence why i sell it and myself to make money from my art, if i were not confident in what i was doing, i certainly wouldnt feel comfortable working for people.

Another camera might not get you decent results but i have seen the type of photography achieved by the Nikon system and i think it will suit my style of shooting very well. Fact of the matter is, Pentax dont produce a pro camera, it doesnt cater for the pro market its all about the entry level... I am happy to spend 1000s on a lens if its a fabulous lens, pentax just simply doesnt give me that option.

I have hung around waiting for pentax to compete with the big boys for a while and its just not happening so i have to move over.

Thanks for your time, sorry you dont appreciate my work or the mere fact that i have put alot of thought into this decision and what it means both to me and to my pocket to switch systems.

Its amazing isnt it, on the internet people feel they 'know' you or the 'real' reason you are doing something. When in actual fact they can presume but never know.

I think i have stated my opinions clearly enough, both to myself and on here in light of what people have said.

I dont need to justify myself anymore. I have found a number of disadvantages with the pentax system and i am looking for something that i can improve with.

I'm sorry you dont understand my point of view George, but to presume in that way is just silly

I will say again i have had wonderful results with the Pentax, i can look at some of the pictures i have taken and know that i have got the best results i could have got - this isnt a magical fix to make me a better photographer - i am studying for my degree to learn all that

My camera is my paintbrush and i will use the best i can
