old slide projectors can be found dirt cheap, and easily modded with slides/gels snoots, wide angle lenses etc forthis type of use as well....

This last shot shows at least YOU know what your doing

Nathan, have you got a video projector?
I've found a projector and smoke machine can be used on white backdrops to light some funky background effects...

you likely won't see much difference in sharpness (other distortions maybe) until you blow up 11x14 or larger.

so as not to hijack another thread...

I thought I'd share this image to illistrate a very basic high key image shot.
I used two strobes at 45 deg angles with umbrellas to light the white seamless paper.
Mr skullhead was lit with one strobe and a shoot through umbrella, with a reflector for fill.

You will note that the use of umbrellas as opposed to softboxes gives a slight falloff of 1/2 stop.
by setting the exposure to get clean whites without actually burning in any hotspots there is no flare or excessive spill light.

hope this helps illustrate what I was talking about in the other thread.........

yep, that background is too hot, (maybee three+ stops brighter than the subject) and is also adding some flare and is washing out some of the hair on the model...

Don forgive my ignorance what do you mean by spill in relation to her (lovely) nose? I'm guessing it refers to light coming off the background and lighting her nose down its length.

Mike
It isn't that the light is there...it is the amount of light...on this shot, it looks uncontrolled, and goes to solid white... could get the same edgelight without blowing the highlights was what I meant.

I'm just gonna comment on #2...

you may try pulling your model a little further from your backdrop if possible, due to spill (ie models nose).
if you manage to get even lighting on the background (softboxes oe umbrellas or even bounced off large reflectors (I use bifold doors painted white for reflectors)) you'll get less chance of blown highlights.
best to get the background 2 stops brighter than the subjects brightest highlight.

so other than the apparent blown whites (looks a little blown out along the models hair) I like it!

I see no reason it should end in a brawl.....
we all agree there is a need to be responsible....
we only disagree on who's agenda that things get legislated, and if it's really anything more than an erosion of civil liberties.....
I think a brief photography course, with the emphasis on observing nature and documenting it with a camera without destroying things would be a great addition to ANY grade/high-school science curriculum.
oggy's got the right idea!

BitWerkz’s f/8 DoF Calculator ($4) on iTunes (ap store) looks interesting, I may buy this...
I'm finding my iPhone handy for geotagging photos as well, as it is easy to lift the gps coordinates off one image from the phone, and add it to a whole series of images from my dslrs....
