Isn't it good news for the TC fans? It's nearly 2014 now anyway and there is more detail added to its description?
Out of interest are these really that difficult to make compared to a lens?

You would think that there is enough marketing data to estimate how many they would sell in a Pentax mount. (WOuld think it would be pro-rata with the other makes against numbers of cameras sold). If that doesn't cover the production costs they're not going to do it.
Although businesses can be pretty dumb. e.g I am a left handed golfer, and although some major manufacturers make models in both left handed and right handed they are often not readily available. Now 12% of people play left handed - surely that would be an instant way of boosting your sales by 12%?

What interested me was they like to do one in a Sony mount. Do Sony sell that many more DSLR's these days than Pentax? I never see them when I am out and about, less than I see Pentax, although I suppose i would notice those more.

The poster said his screw drive lenses were now focusing like lightening whereas the SDM and HSM lenses were more or less the same. (Sigma's HSM still being fast anyway)

Looks like the Sigma 100-300mm f4 (used) price is likely to rise even more

My Sigma 150-500mm HSM isn't that fast AF on my K30 really, probably slower than the DA*300.

It rounds out the Q range nicely. It's now a more extensive range than the 110 film system ever was, so it must be doing quite well enough to carry forwards.

I'm pleased with my Q kit, it does have a place, but tend to use it for specific purposes rather than carrying it all the time.

I'm pleased with mine but am the opposite. leave it in the glove compartment and carry it around in my pocket for the opportunistic shots,

A very good review I thought. Gave me the feeling he knows what he's talking about and he does get to see and test the competition.
Of course the one nag is still going to be the AF based on that, but once accepted it only affects a few then it should do well.
(Unfortunately I maybe one of the few!)

I felt a little bit like that with my K30 when I got it but it was mainly
psychological I think. Firstly you have spent a lot of time over a decision and a fair bit of money and you are having self doubts/guilt about spending hard earned money.
Secondly, you take it out of the box and quickly try and get some shots to look at. Often they get compared to the memory of your best shots with your previous camera. In my case I realised that some of these initial shots were taken in far from ideal light conditions etc.
It's all forgotten now,(well except the speed of the AF which plagued me yet again yesterday!)

Let's see how the K3 AF performs, it seems to me some people have dismissed it already.
My K3 arrives on Friday, I'll give you my opinions when I've tried it out.

Yes you are right. That was based on just a few people saying AF wasn't much different - we should wait a while

All this harking back to the good old days is nonsense. Sports photography is generally more dynamic and a better standard than in the olden days. Likewise new gear has opened up wildlife photography to the masses

Of course it can Steve. Just like we both use it for wildlife. However have you ever been out with a guy with a Canon 7D and a guy with a Nikon D300. All three of you get good photos of a bird (cuckoo) sitting on a post, and then only 2 out of the these manage to track it on take off. Mr Pentax being the odd one out

Hopefully the K3 will put us right up there with these old cameras. If it does, its good enough for me.
I 100% whole heartedly agree with the two statements above...
---------------------------------------
Me too. Well at least he wildlife photographers agree! Seriously though if someone came into a knowledgeable shop and said he wanted to take pictures of a cuckoo on a post I would say buy this K5 or K3, you won't get better value and quality. If he said he wanted pictures of birds flying off in random directions I would tell him to look at the competition. As this is still only a reltively small part of wildlife photography the reality is the Pentax may well still be the best value overall, but the AF will still be the weakest link for this type of photography.

At the price point, Pentax has nothing which competes with a Canon 7D for wildlife and action in good light. And the 7D is four years old

On a unpredictable moving target, a Canon 7D with a 300mm f4 will get many more shots in focus than a K5 variant and a DA*300 f4.

The downside of the 7D is poor high ISO performance.

The K3 hopefully addresses that. However, the initial review on the other forum suggests AF is not much better than the k5II.

Guess I'll wait a while before I decide whether to take the plunge.
I agree. I was actually with my friend who has just got a 7D as an upgrade and we were both shooting waders taking off unpredictably. He was using a 500mm prime and 1.4xconverter on a gimbal head and I was using my K30 and a 300DA* on a Gimbal head. He had a better success rate on focusing than me. Perhaps my eyes are going!
I am more than happy with my K30 and my wildlife shooting K5 friend is as well but he also says the same about the focusing and he's only 30!
