Just to quickly try the K20D with infrared; today in sunlight I found that, ISO 800 and 2secs @ f8 achieved a reasonable image. These are a lot longer exposures than on the Pentax istDL2.
The filter was changed on the K10D (and presumably all subsequent DSLRs), and it's a much stronger one than on the *istD series.

Jack, here's one I took with my *istD a few years back. Keep meaning to try it again, but never seem to get round to it. Ammonyte did some nice ones at Burnham Beeches, I seem to recall.

I dropped them a line at Stowe to make sure that tripods are allowed, and that there wouldn't be a problem with a gang of rowdy photographers loafing around the place.

The reply has good and bad news...

The good news is that tripods are fine to use "in a safe and considerate manner", so we need to be aware of other visitors and make sure we don't trip them up or get in their way, which is fair enough.

The bad news? "I am sorry, but you will not be able to put any Stowe photographs on your own websites or any other internet sites/forums."

I know the NT are very protective of the value of images of their properties, and that's fair enough I think, the money raised from the sale and licensing of photos helps pay for the maintenance of the places they own, and which we enjoy. If we plaster spectacular shots of those same properties on here or elsewhere, then people who want images of those properties could ask us direct, and the NT would be missing out on vital funds.

It's a shame, but there we go, and we have to respect that. I don't think it means we can't post any shots we take on here, as some won't be recognisably Stowe anyway, and any with my mug in them would be worthless.

And it won't spoil our day, as we can photograph what we want, and still have a good old chinwag.

See you all Sunday!

Did you win?

No problem Nathan, just searched the forum for 'comparison' and glanced through the results - that looked like it was probably what you were after.

What are you wanting to compare?

I made sure I wasn't a complete numpty before exchanging stuff!

Thought as much, but also thought I'd check.

Looking forward to Sunday though, anyone checked the weather forecast?

Well, with a heavy heart my 2nd K-7 is going back for a refund.

Thing is the problem is so simple that I am surprised at not hearing anyone else on here mention it. Simply, when using the grip, the rear dial stops working, randomly it may come back, then go again etc. Had the grip replaced 2 weeks ago, tested fine in store, went ***s up next day at the zoo.

Took the whole damn lot in yesterday for complete exchange, out and about testing today in Bourton on the Water, and lo and behold if it didn't happen all over again, you just never knew if it would work or not. So ****ed off with it that, we left Bourton after less than an hour and came home. When we got home, tested again to make sure I wasn't being a numpty, then the front dial stopped working, and the rear one did!

Before anyone asks 'did you check...' , 'did you try...' the answer is yes I did! From cleaning the contacts to removing / reinserting batteries, to even buying a spare genuine battery to see if that was the issue, I tried the lot.

With 2x bodies and 3x grips (bodies from seperate batches we believe) I refuse to believe that it is an isolated incident, and I'm not going to compromise by going gripless either. After replacing and refunding the latest spec 17" MacBook Pro as well just a few short weeks ago, I don't think I will be an early adopter again in a hurry.

With the K-7 so under my skin as I'm sure most of you know, I am well and truly gutted.
Sorry to hear all that Danny.

But although I know you don't want to hear 'Did you try...', I'll say it anyway...

Sticking dials is an occasional 'fault' with my K10D, and my *istD before it, when used with a grip. All it is with these is that one of the dials (the one you're not trying to turn) has moved half a notch, so it's between full clicks. A quick turn of this dial sorts it out.

Might that have been it? Did you try that? I have a feeling you did, but can remember for sure.

Are the dials different to the K10Ds? Do they have a different feel to them? It might be that the contacts in them have changed and it's more prevalent a problem now than it was before. :

Realised earlier today that next Sunday will probably be my first chance to try out a K-7 (if one of the lucky owners will let me ). As John McD has noted on another thread, my local shop hasn't got a huge amount of Pentax in stock...

They definitely have had a K-7 in stock, and usually have some Pentax stuff (admittedly only 1 shelf of it though), and when I've badgered them about getting another K-7 in they've certainly been expecting one.
