It depends on how much you're willing/able to spend, assuming you want something around the 28mm mark (which is roughly equivalent to a 42mm lens on full frame).

Top of the range would have to be the FA 31mm Ltd, but the price is scary!

The FA 28mm f2.8 has good reviews, but is quite hard to find as most people were buying zooms by the time it came out. It's also only available used.

The Pentax-M and SMC Pentax 28mm f3.5 are probably the best bang per buck 28mm. The SMC Pentax version is from the same era as that 50mm f1.2, it's smaller than the 18-55mm kit lens but heavy and well-built. You'd have to use Manual mode and stop down metering but it isn't too hard and the images are worth the effort. The Pentax-M version isn't quite as sharp wide open as the earlier lens, but by f8 they're about equal and the M version is a little more common. Keep your eyes open and you can find them for about £50.

Also worth considering a 35mm, either the new DA 35mm f2.4 or the DA 35mm f2.8 Macro Ltd, although unless you specifically want the macro functionality I'd pick the former due to it being incredibly sharp and very cheap considering the build quality.

Which 135mm is it? Pentax-M?

Cracking little lens, there are sharper out there but I don't really think you can beat it for the money.

I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of dust. My 100-300mm had a fair coating inside and images weren't noticeably different after I blasted it out with a can of compressed air.

Thanks for that - looks like I've got a bit of a hunt on my hands then!

I'm intrigued when the K1000 case changed. I have a minty K1000 which judging by the serial number is from the first batch to be made in Hong Kong after production was moved from Japan, and wouldn't mind getting the correct case for it although I haven't used it for ages.

Depending on which FA 28-80mm they used it isn't a bad lens. I've got the PZ one and the f3.5-5.6 version which seems to be optically identical but minus PZ and slightly slower at the long end, both are capable of decent results.

I do think most of the problems with older consumer-grade lenses are due to us making much higher demands of them now. Most people in film days would have sent the roll off and had a pack of standard postcard-sized prints back. Nowadays we can and do crop and enlarge images ruthlessly to get the shot we want, which magnifies any imperfections in the lens.

I wouldn't worry about the voltages, as all Pentax flashguns I've tried have been safe. If you're worried, try borrowing a multimeter and measuring the trigger voltage. Just turn the flash on, set the meter to measure DC volts, touch the positive probe to the centre pin of the hotshoe "foot" and the negative probe to the side contact, then read the voltage. I have yet to see over 8v from any Pentax flash.

I can't really offer much advice on the AF400FTZ beyond this, my favoured flashguns are an AF201SA (tiny but powerful, works in Program mode on my K-m) and an AF280T (powerful, has multiple modes and bounce/swivel head).

Hmm, see, the K1000 cases I've seen (stamped "Asahi Pentax" so presumably genuine) are different again!

The KM case I have looks like this, although that one seems to be a copy rather than the genuine article. The top of the front part is pretty much identical though.

The K1000 ones I've seen are like this.

I could do with the long front for a KM/KX as I rather like my K 120/2.8 for shooting architectural detail but obviously it won't fit into the standard case. At present I just unclip the front, but this makes the lens rather vulnerable to sudden rain showers or knocks against hard objects.

It sounds pretty rare to me!

From what I understand Kites generally go for carrion or small live prey.

I'll investigate closer. The case is sort of halfway between the Spotmatic's leather case and the cardboard ERC sold for the M series, the main obvious difference is the dimpled finish and the way the top of the "nose" is stitched to the rest of the front - on the Spotty the nose is a separate piece of leather while on the KM case it comes up onto the top of the case to form a sort of "T" shape. This case is also more flexible than the M series case and doesn't seem to crack as badly.

I also have a very tidy Spotty with original ERC/strap and Super Tak 35mm f3.5. The case and lens came with my KM, however given the supplier sticker inside the case was earlier than the camera (and the presence of the M42 lens) I surmised that someone had bought a KM to replace a dead Spotty. I've since replaced it, united the KM with the 55/1.8, and sourced the correct case for the KM

I did buy another for my KX but it never came out of the pre-xmas London post. I just hope whichever light-fingered individual was dipping into the mail was seriously disappointed to get a scruffy old camera case rather than anything saleable!

I too was caught out by the MX case as I was sold a standard M series one which, judging by the distortion, someone had determinedly rammed an MX into! It recovered more-or-less the correct shape after some careful bending and now protects my Italian-spec ME from any further scuffs.

Did longer front parts exist for these cases?

It does seem to be a cross between an ME Super and a KX, in terms of functionality. I just wish they'd fitted the aperture indicator window to the K2 as well (it's on the K2DMD but not the plain K2, weird!) That camera shot all the holiday slides and negatives throughout my childhood, and is the main reason I have Pentax now (bought a K1000 so I could borrow lenses, and went from there).

I narrowly missed a tidy black non-working K2 a couple of months ago, at the price it went for having it CLA'd would have been worthwhile to end up with a perfectly functional clean K2 for very sensible money compared to what I've seen them go for. I don't feel any urge to buy a chrome one as there's already one of those in the family collection.

As for cases, I was given to understand that there was a new design for all three K bodies which is subtly different from the Spotty case. I have one for my KM, which is very close to mint and has been reunited with a 55/1.8 lens to make an original outfit. I have since seen a mint, boxed example of this case which advised that it was for the KM, KX and K2.
