Tony, I think David might be! I've managed to get hold of one now (shown above).

Our local Tesco frequently resembles the scene from Shaun of the Dead where they're attempting to reach the Winchester. I often wonder if I should carry a cricket bat on trips there...

There's an excellent site here devoted to Pentax screw-mount cameras and lenses, you should be able to find what you need to know there. I have an original Spotmatic and like it - the lack of a flash hotshoe makes it stand out amongst SLRs. I chiefly bought it as I had a Super Takumar 35mm f3.5, matching ever ready case and strap in the wardrobe from other lots, so decided to buy a Spotmatic to hold them together:

The manual lenses I've had the most use from on digital:

SMC Pentax 28mm f3.5 (also the Pentax-M 28mm f3.5, which is slightly smaller and later)

SMC Pentax 120mm f2.8 (very tricky to find - I've never seen another in the year or so since I bought mine. The Pentax-M 135mm f3.5 could take its place despite being a little slower).

Going on to cheap-but-decent AF glass, the Pentax-F 80-200mm f4.7-5.6 is a pretty handy performer. It feels a bit plastic but takes sharp enough photos and doesn't take up much space in the bag. The matching 35-80mm is terrible IMO, if you want a small walkabout lens then try the Pentax-F 35-70mm or save a bit more and look at the new DA 35mm f2.4.

The obvious addition to your existing kit would be the DA or DA-L 55-300mm zoom. This has excellent reviews and would compliment the kit lens well for extra range, the DA-L version has a plastic lens mount, no quick shift focusing, and no lens hood but is optically identical to the DA version.

If it's drizzling I tend to go out with film rather than digital. You get a nicely gritty look with black & white on grey days, plus something like an MX is less likely to be bothered by a bit of water than my K-m.

The tricky part with all Takumars seems to be finding one which hasn't been meddled with and doesn't have any scratches on the glass. I've been lucky with my 35mm and 135mm (both near perfect with just a few paint rubs), the 55mm f2 had lost its trip pin for the auto stop down function so I had to make a new one from a tiny bolt filed to remove the thread and then trimmed to length. It's also missing both end caps which is a bit tricky with a 46mm filter thread!

I have a spare original metal cap on hand which will be going onto the 55/1.8, giving me the classic set of three primes to transfer between the SV and Spotmatic depending on which I feel like using.

Interesting comment about different lens behaviour on film and digital, I just got a couple of rolls of slide film back during which I used the M 40-80mm amongst other lenses. The barrel distortion of this lens doesn't seem to show up on digital, but on film I've got at least one wall which is noticably bowed in the centre!

That's a bit worrying - I've just bought one of those for my SV as it's the correct lens for the body and my Auto Takumar 55/2 seems to have a few scratches. I'm hanging onto the Auto Takumar for now as if I ever see an S2 cheap enough I'll probably reunite the parts.

They are superbly made - mine has a slight wobble in the focus mechanism which hopefully won't show up in the test photos.

In general so long as you try to stick to SMC Pentax lenses you won't go wrong - there are a lot of cheap and nasty old manual zooms about from the '80s which are best avoided!

Nice bit of driving from Petrov earlier, not everyone can manage to hold off a former world champion in a faster car for that many laps!

I'm back from Top Gear Live, was a bit difficult for photos due to lighting and sheer mass of people. On the plus side when I checked ebay this afternoon I found (and won) a Super Takumar 55/1.8 for £24 including post. Just hope it's in as good condition as the seller claims, it is in a (non-original) hard case which I usually see as a promising sign...
