Over the past year we seem to have had a most unfortunate increase in the use of negativism, disdain, and occasionally, outright abuse. Well I have better things to do with my time.
My comment was intended as none of these, Tim. If it seemed anything other than a gentle tease, then please accept my apologies.

Without a doubt. How else can you get an image half the size, with a focal length 50% more...

I was trying to show the size of moon image possible with a 300mm lens and 2x converter.
Mine was taken with just a 400mm lens.

Oh well, if we're talking the comparatively easy pre-totality shots...

Found this one on E-Bay Aust

Thats about 100quid for the buy it now price.
That's a manual focus one. Personally, I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole. It's got fungus, and cosmetically it looks quite battered.

Mine is much nicer.

I might be able to get hold of a Sigma 400mm F5.6 lens as loaner if the guy ever answers his phone
If he doesn't then I might have one for sale soon. Though heaven knows what it would cost to send round the world.
If i like this one i maybe able to convince him to part with it.
What do you expect one to be worth
I would think about 40quid to get it here
Hard to say. I paid £85 for mine about 4 months ago. But decent Pentax-mount glass is fetching a lot more than it was then.

Three AF ones have gone on eBay recently, for between £126 and £187.

Would a 2x teleconvertor be any good :
I've done a fair bit of experimenting with the teleconvertors I have, a Takumar A and a Jessops brand PKAF.

In both cases, what I gained from the bigger image was lost due to optical degradation from the TC, so the result was slightly worse than with the lens on its own, even taking into account the bigger enlargement required with just the lens.

A better TC might not have this problem, but I gained nothing from mine.

We have a lunar eclipse coming up on the 28th and it will be visible on the east coast of Aust. I was planning on taking a couple of shots but i am not sure what the optimum camera settings are and what would be the best lens to tackle it. The longest i have is my Tamron 28-300 (would this be sufficent). I am assuming the longer the better and i may be able to borrow a longer one if its a huge benefit : Thanks
Certainly the longer the better.

I used a 400mm lens for the last total lunar eclipse here, and it's long enough if you don't mind cropping.

The problem I had was that the long exposures (only a few seconds) needed during totality meant that the movement of the moon was significant enough to result in a lot of blurring.

What I should have done was crank up the ISO, and use as short a shutter speed as possible.

Not ideal either way.

There was a fair bit of discussion about all this back in March:

but the lens can only focus a small area but sometimes i want the whole area in focus if you know what i mean.
This won't change even with a "proper" macro lens.

Close up, the depth of field is extremely shallow, and you have to maximise it with very small apertures and correspondingly lots of light.

It is not easy, and if you're looking for an easy solution, I fear you'll be disappointed.
