Good for you, Don, thank goodness someone said it.

Or the LX, of course.

My brother used to have one, and he still tells the story of when he dropped it on a rock, and it was the rock that broke.

I'd recommend Super A or ME Super (I used to have both).

Not knocking the legend that is the K1000, but metering is a lot more convenient with the later bodies. The ME Super in particular is a very good compromise between very basic, and convenient metering.

Make sure the seals aren't perished.

I seem to rember the 18-135mm being slated for poor performance (as well as cost) yet if you ask about a general walkabout lens this always comes out the favorite recommendation.
I'll probably be getting the K-3 with an 18-135. It's a much more reasonable price now, especially so in a kit. Though I'd be tempted by the 18-270 as well - if I'm going to get something where the IQ is compromised for the general usability, I might go the whole hog and get the monster zoom range.

I had a play with a K-3 and a 20-40 in SRS last week; it's certainly nicely made. But although it's very quiet, it's nowhere near as fast focusing as the 18-135, which is the only other DC motor lens I've used.

I still don't get the zoom range at all - it's not something I'd be buying, regardless of IQ.

What a bizarre thread...I thought the OP was asking about using a particular lens for portraits....
It has gone a bit OT... but the other thread we discussed the whole perspective thing on was locked IIRC.

Is it possible for the mods to move the relevant posts from here to that one?

By enlarging it you have moved the vanishing points further apart and changed the perspective.
You don't change the perspective in a photograph by enlarging it.

Perspective is about the *relative* sizes of different objects in the image, or of the lines between them if you like.

This does not change because of enlargement.

Nice. The light on the backdrop has a slightly distracting bright bit at the left edge of the gap between his arms, which would be easy enough to clone out, but other than that it's lovely.

All this talk about lenses changing perspective is a misunderstanding of what is happening. Only viewing distance changes perspective.
If anyone is still in any doubt, here are a couple of pictures I took the other day to illustrate this.

First, both complete frames:

50mm:

.. and 140mm:

And here's a crop of the 50mm one that's (to within a couple of pixels) the same view as the 140mm one:

I took the 50mm one first, and did nothing other than rotate the zoom ring and refocus for the 140mm one. Obviously, the camera was on the tripod the whole time and didn't move, even for the refocusing

Hopefully it's clear that all the objects in the second two images are the same relative sizes as one another (ie have the same perspective). The easiest way of comparing them is to open them up in separate browser tabs and switch betweeen them.

Why stop now please?
Probably because hotheads like me get increasingly exasperated, and eventually resort to name-calling.

I'm doing my best to stay calm, by imagining Algi as a house-elf* from Harry Potter. I can therefore feel sympathy instead of frustration.

Eventually, of course, it's possible, albeit unlikely, that Algi will take two pictures where he hasn't moved the camera in between, and the sport will end.
