I like the lighting (any hints or a sketch please?)

Excellent portrait, superbly executed,
If you look at the image and in particular the catchlights in the eyes, you can more or less see how it was done, my guess is a 90cm softbox on low-ish power to camera right for the model and a light to camera left, just behind the model, out of shot, lighting the BG.

Thanks, he is a dancer and does 20 press-ups between each shot to keep the muscles pumped up!
Lighting is as follows Bowens Esprit 400 keylight off to the right in a softbox and not much higher than his head. Silver reflector to the left of camera to fill the shadows. Bowens Gemini 250 Backlight with a honeycomb grid and barn doors for spillage control. Pentax AF400t on a Calumet background light stand as a background light on a black paper background. I can't remember the lighting ratios tbh.
Bowens Pulsar tx on camera and Tx/Rx on the Bowens heads and a wee cheapo optical slave on the Pentax one.
K20d with my favourite portrait lens, a Pentax-F 50mm f1.7

Nice. The light on the backdrop has a slightly distracting bright bit at the left edge of the gap between his arms, which would be easy enough to clone out, but other than that it's lovely.

Thanks Chris for pointing that out, easily sorted.
Obviously the picture has been cropped to 10x8 format, which is the industry standard for actors and their agents and so on. Totally beats me why they should want to conform to a Victorian paper standard when A4 would make infinitely more sense.

A nice image and I'm sure that he will be very happy with it.
For me, personally I would have preferred him to be very slightly straighter just so that you could see 'white space' all around his pupils rather than have them right in the corner of his eyes and I would crop it so that his lower back was visible, rather than cut off slightly, with slightly less between his left hand and the right hand edge (if that makes sense).
The lighting, pose and, most importantly, expression are excellent. It's a quality of image that I would hope to aspire to. Well done.

yeah about the only thing I change post production wise would be to desaturate the whites of the eyes a bit and brighten em up a tiny bit.... they do look a little red
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.
