How much did you crop it by to get that magnification with the 180mm?
Now you've got me - If my maths is right, the Nut Weevil is around 25% (i.e. not that much). I then resized it to 1920*1200 (my monitor res) and this is a flickr resize smaller.

For those that like their weevils, I just processed this one. Not as dramatic as the nut weevil, but just a silly looking. I believe that it's a Figwort weevil at about 4mm in size:

Flash set to EV+1, inbuilt diffuser not down. Camera set to manual, f/16, 1/90 and watch carefully for the SR icon to come on. In other words, it's more of a fill-flash than relying on the flash at 1/180. Seems to give a more natural look when it's sunny.

I'm surprised you don't get arrested lugging that around

The Nut Weevil was about 8mm

Don't give up! It just takes practice and a lot of patience.

I find it kind of therapeutic, even if I do get a lot of funny looks from passers-by

Nice lighting too - looks like the diffuser? Did you get the same one as me or was that someone else?
Yes, it was using the LumiQuest SoftBox on a 360FGZ. I'm playing with a new technique that's paying dividends at the mo'

Now, that is what I call a weevil!

I had a morning out in our local woods and got a lot of insect shots.

I've been wanting to get a nice photo of a Nut Weevil for ages:
