I have the 50-135, and until recently had a Sigma 70-200. The Sigma was a great lens for sports with quick and accurate autofocus and was pretty sharp. But for portrait work I would use the 50-135. That is also a pretty sharp lens - slightly more so than the Sigma - and the extra 20 at the short end is quite useful. The autofocus is too slow for sports, but for portrait work no problem.
The AF is NOT too slow for sport!

Perhaps you have been lucky with your lens but mine is certainly has the slowest autofocus of all my lenses and struggles to keep up with any fast(ish) action shots. The 50-135 has a reputation for slow autofocus which my experience supports, and although I have used it for fast action shots it does struggle to keep up.
That said it is a lovely sharp lens and one I enjoy using
My experience is the same as Percy's, tried using mine a number of times for taking pictures of my kids on bikes/roller blades (not planned shooting, just trying to capture a moment) where the movement is not predictable, ie they suddenly come round the corner and I lift the camera up to get a shot and I struggled to get any in focus. Stick on the Sigma 50-150 or 70-200 and the number of keepers shot up. I shoot a lot of running events and the Sigmas are more reliable for me when I've only got the one chance to catch a moment.

Your carting shots are impressive and show the sharpness and colours well, a reason why I still have my 50-135.

I agree with Percy's comment above. For portraits the 50-135 is very good. Its smaller than the 70-200's as well.

Two very different beasts, I have a sigma 70-200 2.8 (guess is a similar size and weight to Tamron ) and the Pentax 55-300.

The Pentax is a lot smaller, lighter and I use mine when travelling light, holidays etc. The pentax AF can hunt for focus although there are ways round this.

The Sigma (believe the Tamron is similar) I use for sport / fast action which is it very good at, but needs a rucksack or similar to take it anywhere. It will seem very heavy if you are used to a 18-135.

MikeP has the latest sigma 70-200 for sale in the classifieds at a fair price. I have this model and was surprised at how sharp it is wide open. The 55-300 can be had relatively cheaply 2nd hand at the moment, been a few in the classifieds..

Depends how and what you will be using the lens for and only you can answer that.

Nice set Simon, 9's a cracker followed by 4 and 10. Seems the DA*300 works well, I'll have use mine more although the flexibilty of the sigma 100-300 is a tough one to beat.
