Hiya again,

Betty..send an email to the CEO of Jessops AND the customer service director/manager, ask how they are going to compensate you for not having a camera since August AND give them a link to this thread to point out the bad publicity they are getting.

cheers Steve.

Hi,

Glad you went to trading standards, If you have time please tell us their comments..it would be of use to others in the same situation.

Did you buy this online from Jessops?, because if you did, the store people are totally wrong suggesting it is nothing to do with them.

I would be in the store on a saturday afternoon when it is full, quoting consumer law in a loud voice, demanding a full refund or replacement within 48 hrs.

cheers Steve.

Hi,

I see you bought the camera in June, so it is well inside any warranty period. Let me say this for everyones benefit..

If an item fails inside it's warranty period NEVER ACCEPT A REPAIR, especially since you can insist on an exchange or a full refund.

Once you accept a repair the whole area of consumer law becomes trickier. I strongly recommend you go first thing to your local trading standards office, if for no other reason than to check exactly where you stand in regard to the law. Retailers whether large or small are notorious for either being totally ignorant of UK consumer law or trying to ignore it.

It is critical you do this, so when you talk to Pentax or Jessops, they are then unable to 'fob you off' with some nonsense. Once a retailer knows you are in full possesion of the facts of law, they suddenly become more efficient...

I used to work for one of the UK's largest DIY retailers...I know what goes on..

cheers Steve.

Hi all,

I have never made any public plea before, so please be sure this is important...

Saw a film last night called AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH.

It has had great reviews and has done well in the USA...you must see it, especially if you have children, or have friends who do. It is not your usual film, it is a truthful documentary, not sensationalist, not full of specualtion, just scientific fact. It is dramatic, fascinating, insightful, sad, moving and above all very scary.

It only has a limited realease and here in the UK is on show right now, but only for about another week or so. if you cannot get to it, MAKE SURE you see it when it appears on DVD soon.

If you want more info then please go to www.climatecrisis.net

I must say, I am not a 'greenie', not an environmentalist, just a relatively normal UK guy becoming increasingly concerned..

PLEASE SEE this film.

cheers Steve.M. (WEST MIDS - UK)

MODERATORS....CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE THIS STICKY??? it is very important to us all.

Hiya George,

Yep...I use both Film and digital..I use a Pentax DSLR which is why I hang around on here! and Contax/Zeiss for film use...so yes, your comments as you say, do not apply to me..they also do not apply to many others.

I had issue with the statement, since you seemed to be tarring all with the same brush, which of course would be silly. There are clearly some head in the sand users of both analogue and digital, which you would expect, given human nature.

JR, as usual is correct.

By the way, just to hijack the thread, do you think Pentax will sell enough of the 10D to make enough profit to justify the hefty time and expense involved? and do you think they stand any chance at all of shifting the 'Pentax is for amateurs' perception which is so rife?

cheers Steve.

Hi George..

I stand by every word I wrote. My original post in this thread was polite and sensible. Your response had without doubt a very dogmatic and unjustifiable statement below, which could not go without challenge:

"would be people with serious computer-phobia or an ingrained inability to cope with change of any sort"

This is simply narrow minded nonsense...it implies any film user is PC phobic or some head in the sand idiot. They ARE NOT. There are quite a few film users on this very forum who you just insulted very well.

I am amazed that any intelligent user of this forum, even the most ingrained digital user would spout this kind of thing...argue your point, but do it with a sense of perspective and at least acknowledge that some folk disagree with your choice, not because they are phobic, but because they choose to.

It would also help your cause if you read other posts properly. I did not use the word 'stupid' anywhere. There is not a show of lots of hands going up simply because others are not bothered and other more open minded digital users are probably embarrassed by the above statement you used.....

cheers Steve.

Hiya,

G says: " even then they would be people with serious computer-phobia or an ingrained inability to cope with change of any sort"

That really is a very outrageously narrow minded and sweeping statement and just plain silly thing to say.

..a little story (true, not invention)..a large further education college in England which has media studies courses, which include photography being taught to a high level by former professional photographers closed it's darkrooms about 3 years ago. The student intake has increased and after so many students requested darkroom facilities they have had to be re-inststated. Many students are having so much fun with this 'dead medium' and getting such good results several of the students have ditched digital because they prefer the results from film.

The students are aged from about 18 up to 27...they certainly are not computer phobic nor are they resisitant to change...they simply prefer the results they now get...why G cannot understand the possibility of this happening I fail to see.

I use both film and digital, they both have their place, the debate is not helped by narrow mindedness or dogma on EITHER side of the fence.

rant over,

Cheers Steve.

Hi Stargazer..

No offence taken at all, I simply think too many times we assume certain things when we should not. Most people as you say assume a change from film to digital is an 'upgrade'. However it may not be..many people have reverted to film after trying digital and finding it does not suit them for one reason or another...

cheers Steve.

Hi,

I would argue with the use of the word 'upgrade' when changing from film to a digital 'wunderkamera'...
