They are from very different eras, but there is no lack of "bite" or contrast in the SMC Pentax 24mm f2.8 lens.

My first suspicion is that the exposure may be off and the 24mm images are actually over-exposed and a little washed out. This could be caused by a lazy lens diaphragm not closing quickly enough, or by the exposure errors that may occur when using older lenses on the DSLRs.
Thank you for your answer John! I have quite high expectations for the K24, having read a lot about this lens in this forum and other sites on the net. My hope is that this lens will be useful in my attempts with low light landscape photography. The lens is in very good condition, and the diaphragm action seems to be 100%. With my limited knowledge of histograms I believe that the exposure of the photo above is quite acceptable. Most probably I just need to learn how to use this lens with the K20D...

I recently acquired a K24mm 2.8. Having taken some photos yesterday and today, I am wondering about the colour rendition of the lens. The colours seems to be rather "washed out" compared to i.e. the 18-55WR, at least on my Mac Powerbook. Is this the way the K24 should perform? The photos below were both shot at f11.

Hi Bjørn,

What a fantastic place you live in. I visited once for a weekend one summer when I was working in Oslo. I couldn't sleep. It was before I was into photography seriously so I'd love to go back one day.
Yes, I like this region of Norway a lot, and the summers here can be wonderful, when it really never gets completely dark at night. You should come back with your camera one day

Thank you for spending time reworking my photos! I really like your version of the first image, it is much better with more light on the foreground rocks and the way you have cropped it. There is no snow in Trondheim now, and the reflections you have highlighted in the rocks are only water. It was raining last night. But my original image is so dark, it is almost impossible to see the texture of the rocks.

I also like your first version of my second image, it is much more interesting than my original.

Thank you again for helping me in the learning process!

Best regards

I have done a slight fix of the images in Lightroom (preset "auto tune"). Does this improve the images enough to rescue them from the bin?

Too dark I'm afraid.

Looks like the camera metered off the sky, as that looks ok, but it has resulted in the land being virtually black.

Might be salvagable in Lightroom or something like that (boost exposure, ND grad on sky, etc.)
My idea with these photos was to use the rocks first image and land with boathouse second image as a silhouette. I wanted these foreground parts of the images to be almost black. But I am now quite in doubt whether the whole idea may have been too ambitious

Not sure if it`s my monitor, am in work but the land seems very dark, cannot make out any detail at all.
Nice reflections, but they do tend to get lost in the darkness.

The photos were taken about two hours past midnight- night photos. They light condition were great, but maybe the photos ended up being too dark?

These photos were taken last night at Ringvebukta by Trondheimsfjorden with K20D and 18-55WR. Comments and critique are welcome!

Thank you for your advice George! I will investigate further into different ways of cropping the image, there is really a lot to learn here.

Thank you all for taking time to write comments on my photo! It is highly valuable for a beginner like myself to get this kind of response, I really appreciate it!

If the intention was to show how the colours of the sky are mirrored in the water, then a portrait crop would work better, especially if some of the foreground water was omitted, along with chunks to the left and right. This would leave the boat at the interstices of lines delineating the bottom and left-hand thirds of the picture.

I tried to do a portrait crop of the image, like you suggest George, but when taking of chunks to the left and right, the boat could only end up at the bottom right-hand corner. I probably have not cropped the image exactly like you meant to suggest, but it is hopefully a step in the right direction? I like the idea with a portrait crop, it really changes the image. I guess my intention with the original photo was to show how the beam from the sunset at the left-hand side spread along the mountain ridge, into the sky, and the resulting reflections in the water.

Thank you very much Andrew for your comment!

Due to the lack of foreground interest and the dull upper sky, I might go for a more extreme letter-box crop enhancing the horizontal lines.
I welcome your suggestion about extreme cropping. Is this anywhere close to what you had in mind?
