I used to get the venture bus down to Prudhoe for the cubs on a friday night!, 3 halfpence each way, or we would sometimes run and spend our threepenny bit at Geordie Atkinsons fish shop on a bag of chips!....those were the days..............

What a bad person I am!.....I work mainly in woodland management, selective planting,or clearing,to enhance our countryside and supply a suitable enviroment for our wildlife.Nothing wrong with that so far,I have the envious job of looking after 30acres of mixed woodland and scrubland in Northumberland, which is now a true wildlife haven. The woodland is at least 4 miles from any other planting, so it is infact an island. We have a healthy stock of roe deer,5 badger sets,2 nesting pairs of barn owls,2 pairs of nesting buzzards,1 pair of peregrines ,woodcock, grey partridge...the list goes on and on!. In the wet areas of scrub and heath, we have common lizards, which are very uncommon in our area!,great crested newts again the list goes on!.
Our main claim to fame is our resident population of RED SQUIRRELS!..on site we have on average 35,this number has been maintained for the last 9 years since I took over.It was only last year when the first greys arrived, since then I have either trapped or shot 15 grey incommers. I dont take any pleasure from killing them it is just a job to be done,I have seen the effect of squirrel pox on the red population, and it's not nice!..The usual time span from contact to death is 3 days, 4 at the most, thats your red population gone, just like that.I might as well give you the rest of my killing list so I can be branded a really bad person......Mink!,rats,control of magpies, control of crows, and last but not least ferrol cats!....now it's good evening and goodnight gentlemen, from a really "Bad person!"...............Ken
