For what it's worth, I liked your original version, it had a quirkiness and character that appealed to me. You will never be able to please everyone so I would say just do what you think is right and take from the advice the few nuggets of gold that appeal to you.

The target="_blank" is important is it opens the link in another window and so your site doesn't get closed
