I went the Samsung route with the GX10, because it was cheaper anyway, but at the time I bought mine Samsung were also offering £100 cashback

The Pentax will likely have a higher resale value simply due to the badge, but if you're not too fussed about that I don't see why you shouldn't take advantage of Samsungs competitive pricing (to try to build a name for themselves) for what is the same camera.

Nero works well, might be able to get a slightly older version on ebay for not very much.

All you want to do is copy the data files to the dvd, no program should have a problem doing that. Can Windows burn DVDs, or is it only CDs?

I have a seperate hard drive which all my data is backed up to once a week, and every now and then I'll burn a dvd or two of new photos.

As I'm not a professional, I don't always shoot in RAW - and when I do I tend to just keep the best shots uncompressed, run the others through PS and save them as JPEGs, as they take up significantly less space

I guess again it's exactly the same with a different name on it, but the battery for my GX-10 also lasts brilliantly. Although like a lot of Li-Ion things, it does seem to fail very quickly at the end, goes from full to nothing without much warning!

I was wondering what backup software people used and what the inpact on PC performance was?

Good backup software is key I think. I use and extranal Harddrive and double layer DVDs. I also partition my main drive to ensure that I can reformat the Cdrive if required without loosing other data.
Partitioning the drive is a really easy thing to do that I've seen almost no one I know do. PCWorld and Windows would happily have all of your personal data in My Documents :S I save everything personal to a seperate partition, and I might lose a few random files, but could reformat C: at any point in theory.

For backup I use Norton Safe and Restore, I've got a 500gig drive in one of the PCs, and all the others backup over the network to it every week. You can set it to compress the data if needed, but to keep it relatively quick I choose not to.

I was looking at getting an external drive, but I couldn't find one that hadn't got at least a couple of comments saying it had died after a relatively short amount of time. In then end I've just gone for a 500GB internal drive, and will back up from all the computers over our home network. It doesn't give the security of having it in a different place, but it was cheaper

I'd had a bit too much of the champagne at this point, hence the slightly leaning angle. Christmas pudding in the background tasted goooood though

Cropped down a little, but other than that is exactly as shot. I couldn't stop myself taking photos - haven't seen a sky with so many colours in for a while!

Any advice greatly appreciated (as always )
