You've struck a bit of a chord with this post. I bought the 18-135 to give me a WR all purpose range but comparing the IQ of this and my considerably cheaper 50-200WR I'm not convinced it was money well spent. Bang for buck, as a hobbyist, I would go for the DA 50mm f1.8. A bargain that gives you speed and outstanding IQ, for peanuts.
Everybody's circumstances are different, my comment is just a reflection of mine.

I have to watch my pennies these days, so like to get good value for money with lenses. Like you I bought the 18-55 and 50-200 WR zoom kit with my camera (K-5). These are good, but I wanted a small standard prime so the next purchase was the DA 35mm f2.4. When I could afford it, I bought the 18-135 WR and since then my original two kit zooms are seldom used. This is my usual walk about lens, and I do recommend it. Later I expanded focal length with the 55-300 and then 12-24 zooms, both second hand but perfectly good. Most recently I bought the DA 50mm f1.8 prime for portraits.
My findings are that for flexibility the 18-135 is the most useful, but when it comes to image quality, notably speed, sharpness, and bokeh the two little primes are hard to beat, and in these respects are hot on the heels of the lovely but more expensive 'limited' and FA prime lenses. The 35mm and 50mm cost me £113 and £99 respectively, on special offer.
It is all a question of your style of photography, but as Steve pointed out the kit lenses you already have are good lenses and certainly as capable as the 18-135 in terms of image quality - maybe even better. However, the 35 and 50 primes combined are less expensive than the 18-135 and will give you another approach to photography as well as better images. If you want to supplement the lenses you already have, I highly recommend these primes.
I avoided the 18-270 because of its bulk, slow speed, weight, it's not WR, it is expensive, and a belief that excessive range of focal length compromises image quality. Still, others will disagree, and if you prefer to use just one lens for all situations, then this might be to your liking. Conclusions in this review are spot on. User experiences on the DA35 f2.4 and the DA50 f1.8 are also worth a read.
Like you, I started my photographic life with a Zenit slr, I guess that's where my appreciation of simple prime lenses started.
By the way, I use the Pentax O-RC1 waterproof remote control - it's tiny and works perfectly!

I just want to share that I just bought the DA35 f2.4 and it is a fantastic lens paid $140 USA dollar.
Here in Canada it has been tag as "fantastic plastic"...it is a cheap lens made all of plastic, but it is the best all round prime lens I have have ever owned. It so reminds me of the days when I ran around taking film photos with my K1000.
it is razor sharp and my photos have simple gone to the next level with this lens. Find one...buy it. I PROMISE you will not regret it!!
Both taken with the 35mm...it has the wow factor this lens!!!!!

I have a Zenit B a Nikon F50 for that stuff called film and my pride and joy.....a Pentax K30 with kit lenses.(18-50mm and 50-200mm)
Am reading so many books to wake up the grey cells and starting an 8 week refresher course at college in April.
Waiting for delivery of a Metz flash AF58 ii( present from missis).
Can anyone guide me towards a cheaper Wireless shutter release cum flash trigger that works reliably and advise me about a walk about lens?
I am looking at the pentax 18 -135 WR or 18 -270 but I might have to sell my kidneys...
