World Photography Organisation Awards

I got an email yesterday telling me one of the 3 images I entered for the World Photography Organisation awards had been shortlisted in the Low Light category. As you can imagine, I was pretty excited about it. However, when I looked, the image was not there. As there were only 9 images in this section, instead of the 10 in all the other sections, I thought they had forgotten to publish my image, so I sent them an email. They then told me they had sent me the email accidentally, and that the image was actually Commended, ie in the top 50. I am obviously pleased to get in the top 50 images in the category, but a bit pissed off that they'd sent me the wrong email. Turns out their Facebook page is full of similar stories. Bugger. Still chuffed though, but not as much as I would have been if they hadn't first sent me the wrong email.

That's a bummer! But it is a great image, and congratulations on the commendation.

Your photographs are excellent, they had a big impact on me when you originally posted them here. I look at quite a lot of pictures, but not all that many make the lasting impression yours did.

Stick with it, even if the WPO haven't seen the light yet!

I can't believe that shot didn't make the top 10. The standard must have been very high indeed.
I 2nd ronniemac on that comment and would certainly rate you as one of my top 10 favourite image makers on this site.

Thanks for your comments! It's the fact that they initially told me it had made the top ten then said it hadn't that annoyed me. If they'd just got it right first time and told me it was in the top 50 I would have been more than happy with that. A contact of mine on G+ in the same situation posted that she'd been shortlisted only to be later told the same as me, that her image had been Commended and they'd sent the wrong email. Bit of a shambles for a major competition.

Jon I saw your picture in the recently added section of PPG and it blew me away. Its fantastic. Congratulations on your commendation and sorry they cocked up the results announcements.
Still a really terrific achievement on your part though.

Ahh yes I easily remember that one from the Gallery, still outstanding, one of the very few times I've thought 'I'd like a print of that'

Thanks very much for the comments! I was very pleased how this shot came out, as it's a 2.5 secs handheld exposure, the lightning acting like a flashgun to freeze motion. I only have two other storm at night shots so far that came out without blur. Next monsoon I am going to try it in infrared. Still wondering whether a Lightning Trigger is worth investing in.......
