Wireless flash question

Tried to use set up a remote flash close to a bird feeder today in order to get some shots with a long lens from the comfort of my bedroom (before you ask, it's the only room with a window that overlooks the feeder in question). Trouble was, the flash unit kept going into 'stand-by' mode and wouldn't fire. Is this a consequence of using cheapo wireless trigger units, an old Centon flash or a combination of both?

If it is the flash, has anyone successfully managed a modification that will prevent this happening?

It might help if you told us the exact model numbers involved.

I have several flash units that do that, to conserve battery !
I suspect it does it on the camera too !? right ??

You need a flash unit that stays on, possibly with a different position on the on switch. My 360af stays on in wireless mode, as does my Nikon SB.
