Windows 8

My netbook, Lenovo S10-2, has just spent the last several hours installing Windows 8 Professional (x86).

No dramas during the install and when it eventually became usable I thought the new interface looked very good.

I then tried to use some of the 'Apps' from the shiny new user interface. No go.

For every app I tried I received the message "This app cannot open because your screen resolution is too small."

These apps apparently require minimum screen dimensions of 1024 x 768, my netbook is 1024 x 600.

We are not amused.

Good to know, but sorry to hear you've found out in this way.

Windows 8 has had plenty of negative reviews, many claim it is intended for the smartphone/tablet market. Many beta users hat the lack of a start menu and for me the look of the interface seems a step backwards and I will not be upgrading to it if I can help it.

Well it's a good job I took a system image of the previous Win 7 installation.

I'll stick with Win 8 for a while just to have a look around.

The only reason I tried it in the first place was that I had read that it was faster than Win 7 on smaller machines.

It seems to me that this is not really a new operating system but a new wrapper around the old one.

I'll see what else I can find to dislike about it.

They already did, it was called Millennium Edition and despite the poor reviews it was on of my favourites.

It won't take you long

Since my software will have to work with Windows 8, even though it isn't a Metro app, I've been playing with it on and off since the early tech previews came out.

I don't like the Metro UI much, it seems quite clunky on a desktop. It's a shame, since it's quite nice on a phone or a tablet.

I've had Windows 8 Pro on both my machines for a couple of days (having had the preview version for a while). Photoshop 6 (64 bit) works really well.

The interface does take some time to get used to, but now I'm used to it I find it pretty easy.

Overall I'm not convinced it will be the final answer and that Windows 9 will be a lot better. Alternate Windows versions, like Star Trek films, tend to be good and bad.

But there is a lot of new stuff in there, it's just hidden under the hood!

Every alternate version of Windows is crap in my experience

Windows 98(SE) was great
Windows ME was crap
Windows XP was great
Windows Vista was crap
Windows 7 is great
Windows 8 is likely crap
Windows xxxx is probably going to be great

I have to ask, why do people install this stuff without waiting to see if it's a dog or not? What's so wrong with Windows 7 that you have to leap to upgrade?

Because you cannot develop Windows 8 applications without Windows 8!

What I hate about Windows is that, no sooner have they released the latest version and updated it with service packs to stabilise it, then they release the next version, winding down support for the older OS in the process!!
