Pentax lenses hard to find? You should tell your friend to remove his "blinkers" (eye shields - used on horses to stop them observing what else is around).
As many others will tell you, you can buy a good selection of new high quality Pentax lenses or any Pentax lens from day 1 onwards will fit. With an older lens you may not has auto focus or exposure but you will have an excellent lens - for example the one you have on teh ME Super will fit and work on the new M-x.
There is another thread which links to:

Which should be an ideal recommendation for you.

A Nikon user will always tell you Nikon is best. I doubt he asked you what you were going to use it for. Fast action sports, static Macro, landscape, portraiture, whatever.
We here are similarly biased towards Pentax, but we do concede that for certain situations, other makes can be better, but that comes at a price normally.
Pentax lenses are not hard to find at all, just search ebay and you'll see. Other than Pentax, all of the other independent makers produce Pentax fit lenses as well. Tamron, Tokina, Sigma, etc.
A Pentax DSLR is a very capable tool with some innovations not found on other makes. For instance, if you want image stabilisation on a Canon or Nikon body, you have to buy a lens with it built in, and they are suitably expensive. Most Pentax DSLR's have shake reduction (image stabilisation) built in to the body, so all and every lens you put onto it, benefits. Even 50 year old screw thread lenses can be used with a cheap adapter. Some limitations do apply, but they can still be used. Any lenses you have already can be used on any Pentax DSLR.
There was a time when Pentax was the preferred 35mm film camera of many professionals. Pentax lost their way a bit in the intervening years, but they are making up for it now.
If you fill in your location in your profile, we may be able to give you better advice about where to buy.

Pentax colours are more vibrant than N's . . . .
Get the K-x . . .
I moved from the K10D to the K20D to the K7 and now I too have a white K-x.
i can use lenses from the early 70s to today. Ask your N friend if he can do that. Chances are his reply will be "no".

Where are you actually based ?
Let's face it , we Pentax users are biased in favour of out beloved Pentax cameras , lenses etc BUT if you are somewhere where they are exceedingly difficult to find [ thus sending you to Ebay ] then you must also consider after sales service etc etc .
It's no good having the best camera on this planet if you can't get any repairs done [ even though it should be a long time before you need something BUT accidents can happen at any time ]
I may seem to be disloyal here - but I think we have to be practical in our advice.
Me --- I love my K-x - it's relatively small so fits my small hands , it's reasonably light - so suits someone with hand problems like me , has built in image stabilisation [ fantastic for someone with reduced sensitivity in their hands and can have hand shake ]

If you take a shot with your film camera, then transfer the lens to your new Pentax camera, you will see a difference in the images.what about the shot taken?
Image quality is largely influenced by the lens but there is a significant difference in the image size.
The image produced by a 50mm lens on a Pentax DSLR will appear to be approximately the same proportions, angle of view etc. as a shot taken with a 75mm lens on a 35mm film camera. A Pentax (and others) DSLR has an APS-C sized sensor, which is smaller than a 35mm frame.

There are things on Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus that I would like to see on Pentax but then again there are other things on Pentax that have so far stopped me buying another make.
i would really want to know what Pentax have that make you stop buying another make..

Pentax lenses of course, have you seen those limited lenses, if you love primes you don't want anything else i would really want to know what Pentax have that make you stop buying another make..
Handling and in body SR are the things for me, with Pentax you would never need to go into the menu while shooting besides the FN menu which is a very simple quick menu and you would miss that with other brands.

Very rugged, water-resistant, small and lightweight (K7D)i would really want to know what Pentax have that make you stop buying another make..
Very intuitive handling.
Superb lenses (some weather resistant too).
Great value for money.
For example, my Pentax gear is about half the weight of my friend's equivalent Canon kit bag
To be honest, a lot comes down to your preference of handling You just have to try out the cameras and find out what works for you - they're all capable of superb image quality these days.

Acually it's none of the things Stefan or Matt list.i would really want to know what Pentax have that make you stop buying another make..
It's hard to describe but Pentax digital pictures (to me anyway) seem to have a certain look to them which the others don't. I couldn't get it with the 7D that I had the pleasure of using for a few days and don't see it in Nikon either.
No doubt the people using those makes will disagree with me but it is probably that alone which has stopped me buying a Canon 7D.
Maybe I'm just imagining it because I don't want to be an outcast from the forum like Amin
