There is a strong pull towards the K-5, I have to admit, towards a Pentax again. The build, the looks, I don't think personally that there is a more attractive camera in it's range. That aside, we all want to make the right choice in the end.
I definitely have to get my grubby's on one soon and get a feel for this camera. If what I have read and seen so far are anything to go by, I am sure in my mind I will make the best choice within the next couple of months. For me the draw to the Canon was the fact I just had it placed in my hands, left to play with for a couple of days and no interruptions, I didn't want to give it back. Only wish it had been the other way around, and that I was given a K-5 to play with instead. Still, I don't own either yet. The reason I am here is to learn as much as I can from those people who do know what it's like to own a K-5.

Is it really that good.

@Simon
Absolutely, best way to do it.

I will make the trip soon and try one out for myself.

Thank you to everyone for your comments so far.

I'm not at all sure there's any realy evidence of this, is there? Teething troubles in new models don't last very long and the K-5 is not that new any more.
Had 2 K10s with no issues
Had 2 K20s with no issues
Had 3x Faulty K-7s
My 3rd K-5 has just had it's lens release button fall off!

Based on my own personal experience, I would have to agree with cbrog there.

Having said that, If I had the cash, I'd buy another in an instant!

+1 with Unlocker

I have a K10 and a K20, I even still have the K1000 I bought new in the late seventies, none of them have ever missed a beat....I too do like the K5, but it (mine) does have some funny habits. Perhaps it could be described as 'quirky'?

Would I recommend it? Yep.

It's not just me then. I tried to take the lens off a Canon 1000D the other month, expecting it to be trivial, and I nearly dropped them both.

Just a question of L lenses to get the best from a Canon.

Graham, are you saying that the Sigma 10-20 DG, Sigma 17-70, Sigma 18-200 DC, Sigma 150-500 APO, Sigma 600 F8 CAT are good on a Pentax but not a Canon?

Obviously the above lenses are from your list. It just reads wrong that only L glass is needed to get the best from a Canon camera.

The 60D isn't as good all round as the K5, and build quality and ergonomics aren't a patch on it, those are facts (well with a degree of subjectivity thrown in).

However you are not buying just a camera but into a system. Decide what lenses you want now and are likely to want in the future, if cost is an issue see what that's going to run you, read owners' comments in those lenses and any comparisons if you can find them (Google is always good in that respect e.g. Brand X lens vs Brand Y lens), maybe ask on different fora for opinions (prepare yourself for bias in advance).

You should then have a better idea of what you want from your photography and a road map for the future. Good luck with your choice !

There's no doubting Canon do make a good camera. I have used a 50 in the past and loved the actual weight of the thing, something a lot of the newer ranges now lack. The lighter composite materials used give a kind of toy feeling, and that puts me off a little.

The 60d though, none too bad. I picked up a Canon 600d and a Nikon d5100 recently and tried them both out. I couldn't believe the weight of those things, even with battery and lens attached, they were much to lightweight, almost felt as though they would just disintegrate on contact with anything tougher than household carpet. Still, I guess the loss in weight can be a good thing if your lumping one around all day long.

Out of these two though, I can only look at the Canon and think yeah, I would be happy to own that.

Looking at the K-5 on the other hand, I'm seriously thinking about selling an internal organ, well, at least untill I can get the cash together by normal means that is.

Was 'teetering' now hanging on by fingernails.

Surely that's a bit like saying you need FA ltds to get the best from Pentax? I'm sure Canon has plenty of non L glass equivalent to Pentax's offerings, and there are primes like the 50/f1.8 or 135/f1.8 which look pretty tempting and are actually cheaper than the equivalent second hand Pentax lenses (for there are no new equivalents available). The Canon kit lens also looks excellent. You can even get a Tokina 16-50 and get the *exact* equivalent of a DA* lens for much less money! Or a Tokina 12-24...

I remain committed to Pentax, prefer the small bodies and beautifully crafted DA Ltds, but let's not imagine that Canon users have it hard, in any way!

You'd best ask Graham and re-read my post. I was asking Graham why he stated that you would need L glass.

Got to say, when it comes to changing lenses quickly then Pentax is definitely the best. Just so easy.

Now Nikons are another story!

I am honestly afraid to handle the thing too much incase it falls apart in my hand. I wouldn't put it down on a windy day, it would blow away.
