Whitby Goth Meet March 2011

I had to make a choice - Whitby or Glasgow. Glasgow won.

Whitby is quite a way for most members in the south, west or in Wales, and unless you book really early accommodation is in very short supply over Goth weekends, meaning you can't decide on a last minute (or even a last couple of months) trip.

I'm already booked in for November. Despite the long drive and cost, it is the one time you can take lots of portraits without anyone getting annoyed.

And I agree, people don't know what they're missing!

Would love to, and these threads do make me scheme about how I could get up there for one of these events! Unfortunately it's a 5 hour drive, and the wife wasn't too thrilled with the idea of being left alone with two small children for the whole weekend while I went 'arseing around with your Pentax forum' (her precise words ).

I wonder what the southern Goths do, surely they must want to celebrate their gothness as well, but without travelling for hundreds of miles...

An honest man!

Kudos to you Tim. My reason for not being there was a $2,700 air fare.

Best regards

Would love to go, but can't justify the £120 petrol bill and 450 mile round trip.

I'm sure many members could make a short break of it, fit it in with a holiday in the area, especially those with "understanding" partners, just as I'm doing with the Scottish meet.

Taking traffic into consideration Whitby can be a 2 hour drive from Leeds, so I cant blame anyone for not wanting to travel for just a day or two, As for high cost of B&B & having to book far in advance there is plenty of reasonably priced accomodation in nearby Scarborough which is only a half hours drive down the coast, so getting up to Whitby is dead easy, and there is a large car park on the road in which is just a few minutes walk from our regular meeting point, cost is about £6 for the entire day.

You should also remember that you dont have to spend all the time snapping the Goths, there is plenty to see and do on the North Yorkshire coast so you only have to lose the wife & kids for one day

Having just said all that I'm wondering if it was a good idea, there are far too many photographers already

I actually worked out what it ended up costing me:
Weekend cottage, two days off work (unpaid because I'm a contractor), food, beer, petrol, chips, more beer, curry, G&T for the other half and a round of crazy golf.

Think I could have bought a K5 for the same money!

Never mind Gareth, that Nikon is quite a good camera and should take nice pictures

Just you try that at Whitby!

Asking girls to put whips in their teeth and show you their stockings if you don't have a camera and just stands there saying "click"!

(Oh, I see what you meant!)

For those of you that now have over active imaginations I'll save your brain some work and show you what Gareth was refering to;

And yes it was Gareth that asked her to put the whip between her teeth, would have served him right if she'd taken offence and whipped him with it, mind you knowing Gareth he'd probably have enjoyed it

And this my good friends will be my last contribution (image wise) to this particular thread, I finish as I started with....

I hope no one thought I was being critical when I said it was surprising more PU members didn't go to Whitby. I realise the vast majority of people on this forum live too far away to make it possible. And its easy for me living in Durham, just about 50 miles away but we have many members in the North of England who would really enjoy the experience.
