The Metz has a slightly higher output, though maybe not enough to influence your decision alone. I think the Metz also has a secondary fill-in flash too.
My personal preference is the Pentax AF540FGZ as it's output is sufficient for my needs.
I think some here have had problems with faulty Metz flashes.

This article will help you a lot link
As you can see the AF540FGZ has a far better coverage then the Metz 58 and is also more powerfull withing that but doesn't reach just as far as the Metz.
The Metz also has a fill in flash which can be handy sometimes, I use an omni bounce on the AF540FGZ to compensate that indoors.
You can't really go wrong with one of them.
ps. for a cheaper AF540FGZ you can look for the Samsung one instead of the Pentax, it's exactly the same

Thanks for the Link Anvh, that was really helpful, not much in it between the two...
So looking at the two I'd prefer the Metz for the incremental adjustments on the power levels and the Pentax because it has a lot of adjustments using buttons as opposed to menu's (really un-professional scrolling through the menu on a camera or flash in front of your client, trying to find an adjustment or change a setting, although I have found the menu on the K20D real easy)
Oh the choices....

I chose the Metz a year ago, but I cannot now remember the reasons why
Probably something to do with the fact that Metz only makes flashguns.

I believe that Sunpak makes the ones from Pentax, I couldn't find their website though

Any views on which is best? Pentax AF540FGZ or Metz mecablitz 58 AF-1
I have seen users on this forum with both or two of one kind or another and wondered what the low down was...
Price wise they are about the same so that is not an issue, but I do need a powerful flash for pro use etc. typical roles likely to be used in: news, PR, documentary, portraits and models on location
Best and have a good holiday
