Which AF method? Rear or shutter button?

Olympic torch passed my road yesterday, and I found that in the hustle/bustle/crowds my grab shots suffered from me not having time to focus properly using the rear AF button, compounded by the fact that I was also trying to frame the shots using a zoom lens - 50-135. So, those of you that find yourselves in fast moving situations, which AF method do you use, please? Rear or shutter button?

I was skeptical about this at first but I have found an improvement in my results. Repeated focusing can increase the incidence of misfocused pictures and after a while the back button focus becomes automatic. The K3 is better suited because of the placing of the button, but when I change to my K5IIs I find myself searching for the button which is not so conveniently placed.

I have no idea how the rear button thing works.

What are the perceived benefits ?
