Whatt spec systems are you running!

Evening/morning. Just wondered what spec systems you are running for your digital photography needs. I will kickstart with my setup. Not a gamer. I have Xbox for that lol

Intel q6600 quad core (overclocked to 3ghz) cooled with artic 7 cooler
8gb of corsair 800mhz ddr2 ram
nvidia gtx 285 graphics card (way over kill sadly)

ASUS mobo
1x 250 hdd windows n programs
1 x 500 data images etc
1 x 750 hdd video editing drive
1 x 500 external as backup

windows 7 pro 64 bit

Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP monitor. Need to get it calibrated

My current machine is an ageing (5 years or more) Pentium 4 3.06Ghz with 4Gb RAM and an ATI Radeon graphics card.

I use a 4Tb Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ for storage, Epson R800 printer, Epson 2450 and Minolta Scan Dual IV scanners.

I just ordered:-

I'll probably reload it with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit when it arrives this weekend, mainly to remove all the rubbish software that Acer seem to ship with their products, many of which slow it down a lot.

Trouble is, most of my peripherals could be considered old too, and may not have drivers for Win 7.

I am going to promise myself not to load the new machine with loads of freebie software that I never use.

If u need a list of what works with windows 7. I can forward you what I have, and what works. Just don't use Nero 7 or below as all got was a blue screel lol

That's a blow, I use Nero 7 a lot. Have to upgrade I guess although the machine comes with Nero Essentials which might be enough.

I mostly use it for burning .ISO CD/DVD images of Technet downloads.

why on earth? Nero costs money... DeepBurner does the job for me...

Errr a Dell laptop of some description, a netbook and three external hard disks. Beyond that I haven't a clue. I probably knew when I got them but damned if I know now. Why would I care provided it works?

I have a T60 for the moment, from work. And that's not really fast enough, but the dual core E8600 with 8GB we have as a test box is nice and rapid with smoothing / smart sharpening.

A homebrew: Intel core 2 on an Abit IP35, 4 gigs of ram, various hard drives inside and out, a Belinea 21" monitor calibrated with a Spyder 2, Nvidia graphics card, Asus Xonar sound card, bits and bobs, Antec 900 case, dual booting with Win 7 x64 Professional and Fedora Core 12. This does all I need for anything. Eventually I'll put in a quad-core processor but otherwise run it for a few more years.

Most of this thread could be written in Swahili for all I would know. I guess my 20 year old master's in computing (and archaeology) has got a little out of date. Come to think of it, even then I was more interested in what I could make the damn things do than what was inside the box. As long as it runs R, allows me to access the internet, edit photos and back up my files, job done. Oh, and it is helpful if I can shove it in a backpack when travelling.

Windows 7 does that out of the box I believe.

Also homebrew PC here almost 5 years old now.
AMD 64 x2 2800+ overclocked to 2.75GHZ, i had it running on 2.9GHZ but that was a bit unstable... at 2.75 it's super stable and runs like it should with a little bit more juice.
ATI X1950XT also overclocked.
4x 512MB ram... don't know the numbers but also a bit overclocked
ASUS ... deluxe but I flashed it over to premium version

2 x 500GB configured as Raid 1 in a Buffalo Linkstation Pro duo NAS used as my photo vault.

2 x 500GB configured as Raid 1 in a Buffalo Linkstation Pro duo NAS used for backups.

1 x 160GB NAS now in retirement as an FTP server for the 4 ip cameras around the outside of the house.

2 x 500GB USB drives for general expansion.

1 x 1TB Samsung story drive formatted in Ext3 as a backup to our Freesat PVR but also available via one of the NAS drives.

1 x 320GB ESATA drive from an upgrade to the above PVR waiting to become useful.


1 newly acquired Mac Mini, 2GHz Cor2Duo, 2GB RAM and 160GB HDD running Snow leopard.
