I have tried Adobe Elements because it came free in a package and I keep meaning to master it, but I usually fall back on Picasa for general editing, again a free download. This does straightening and cropping really well, and you can also tweak highlights, shadows, sharpening, colour temperature and fill light with slider controls. This is fine for most shots and being so easy to use I can edit a load of shots in an evening.

I have used elements for years but have now found the necessity to move to Lightroom. Elements just isn't powerful enough

I have used Corel Painshop Pro for years after changing from elements.
DxO Pro v8 is really good and as it is free just now, I would download that!!

DxO optics pro 8 is a photo and image processing programme.
The site is www.dxo.com/us/advancedphotoshop and is available for a free download until the end of this month.

Being a (former!) PDCU user, DxO Optics Pro 8 is very impressive, and I'm going to carry on using it. The lens softness and smart lighting tools are worth the price by themselves!

If I need to use any other tools, such as red eye reduction (on the rare occasion that I use on-camera flash) or cloning then I export as TIFF and do these in Faststone. I agree with Steve that the raw conversion is poor, but once you're in TIFF then it works well.
