looks like mead.
seriously it looks like a yeast infection is fermenting the sugars in the sap of a tree.....
perhaps in the hollow of the trunk where a branch has broken off?

Reminds me on a fungi. I have to have a look through my books, but I am sure its a fungal infection of the tree. You can see still droplets of fresh sap.

I never learn to take notes.
The pale body reminded me of that filling material you squirt into holes, or a crunchie, sponge. There was a definite oozing of liquid..
The growth was a reasonable size - 8" high by 4" wide.

Well there is a definite amber colour to the sap which points to a fungal infection. It may takes me a few days but I will try to get to the bottom of this unless (as previously stated) someone else can identify it.
Btw how often have I taken pictures where I do not know what it was only a couple of days later. Should learn out of it but still do it

Too true, but this pic seems to have been taken in the UK so no Maple Trees here I love Maple Syrup (the original not the cheap imitations).

Thanks for all your help. I now have a posh label saying weeping polypore.
Next time I will try and record all the details... as fungi are often quite specific to their host .

Looking through last summers photos I found this one that had not been labelled. The growth was on the trunk of tree in Shropshire in June. Of course i did not make note soI have no idea what the tree was.
