Weekly Competition #115 - Yun

"Yun is a Tibetan term which refers to something's inherent, inner qualities - the essence of its richness and uniqueness. Anything can have yun, man-made or natural, people, places or things, rocks or trees as well as artefacts, objets d'art and the like. Yun does not mean showiness or material value. A favourite bowl from a junk shop can have more yun - perhaps because of its beautiful shape or glaze - than a very expensive antique. Your examples of yun, please."

I had to look it up, to find some sort of reference.(I know about Zen, Yin and Yang but had not heard of Yun before.) I am curious how many pictures will be accompanied by a lot of words, to explain the submitted picture to the judge. It seems......There is quite a challenge to be found in entering a picture without description.

I've never set a competition like this before, so I suppose I'd better not say anything till it's over -- unless I've set something that is simply too obscure and further explanation is generally thought to be needed. I've tried to sum things up in the description but if I have failed to express myself adequately then apologies.

Hey, don't worry. Everybody knows how to Google. I also know, this isn't a subject that is likely to be found in the archives. On the other hand....If a tree or a bowl is Yun to me, I can find something. But I like the challenge to come up with something new, specially shot for the occasion.

So, who do we think has best captured the essence of Yun so far :

Who can say Hyram? The way I interpret this is that one person's Yun may not be another's. Far from being a very specific theme it is one open to the widest possible interpretation and one that ought to encourage great photos. As for me I'm still searching for my inner Yun.

I won't bite either. Though.... I am rather fond of the strings picture.
It's very close to (what I think ) the judge means, by setting this theme.

But as Yun seems to be found everywhere, and is so personal it could be an all open contest with no restrictions and every interpretation possible . The way this round is developing this weeks judge better gets himself in Zen-mode to cope with it.

It's quite unusual in the wider community for all entrants to get comments.
They're usually reserved for some sort of shortlist.
I think we may have to adopt this approach as this forum grows.

If submitters of non-shortlisted images want critique they can ask people to comment after the competition.

It took me hours to write up the comments for last week's competition - I vowed at the time not to bother with the weekly comp, in case I win but I seem to have entered again This time tho, I didn't titivate the image as I just wanted to join in and express my feeling of Yun with the raw smudgy image, so I feel safe
