Having done a few for relatives and friends back in my film days you couldn't pay me enough now. But, it looks like you are going forward. If that is the case you might want to look here http://www.jasminestarblog.com/
I don't recall how I stumbled upon her site but I do like her style. It tends to follow the same formula from client to client and her fans are a bit fawning but I think the technique is there. She has a bunch of equipment and I think her husband is the second shooter. There are probably some things she keeps to herself but you still might get some ideas.

An hour to learn lighting and practice portraits?
Good grief I'd be happy if I could take one satisfactory portrait in an hour in natural light where I don't have to juggle multiple light sources and ideally know the person well.

They have what they terms a boot camp I think which might help. The depth of resource there is immense and a photographer I knew (via email) who took terrific photographs spent about three months building up to confidence with his flash setup using them as a source.

Shane - can I suggest that you enter each of the weekly and fortnightly competitions and always shoot a new shot for each and don't use any past shots. Then believe me you'll get some constructive criticism and be able to see how your ideas and technique compare to other members.
We've just had a cracking set of entries for the last fortnightly all taken within the last 14 days to a set theme - in this case 'half and half'. JR's weekly would give you lots of scope to capture a technically excellent shot and get his valuable feedback on it.
Just a thought.
