The manuals for K10D and K100D quote the operating temperature for cameras use as 0 deg. C to 40deg. C. Getting to minus 7 was a bonus. I was out yesterday at Bamburgh and thought I was having the same problem but then I realised I had not switched it back on after a lens swap. Too many buttons and too many Years

That's one of those times when you want to slip an MX into your bag - fully mechanical cameras should be able to keep snapping whatever the temperature (that's one of my justifications anyway )

cut the sleeve off an old winter parka.
sew some velcro to the cut edge.
put your camera in that with the lens poking out the cuff end.
add a chemical hand warmer.
you're good to go to forty below.

It's a special digital film that comes in a roll and has to be exposed to mysterious chemicals before you can play with the image in Photoshop. No preview on the back of the camera either I'm afraid...

Was out in the COLD last night, so took one of my Spotmatics with a Takumar 1:1.4 50mm, instead of any of the digitals.
Of course, it worked a treat - as it has for 40+ years.
How come I can't stop looking at the back of the film door after each shot?
I should glue a mirror back there so I'd have an idiot to look at at least

Just a thought! In a topic "shutter counter" someone commented that Photome records the ambient Temp. that the photo was taken at in the EXIF information. the question was asked why did the camera have a thermometer. Is it part of a system that closes down the camera if you try to use it outside the operating range? Or did beginners K20D just not work becuase the batteries were too cold.

Interesting thought BF!....We may have to add antifreeze during the winter service!,,,,and I wonder if there is a thermometer?....

We were out at -2C today and both K10Ds were operating normally, but I guess -7C is pushing it a bit. Keep the camera warm, inside a coat perhaps, and only bring it out to take the shot, otherwise it's back to film!
Get much colder than that and film becomes brittle and tears when wound on, exposed metal parts of the camera stick to exposed skin...roll on Summer.

not to mention interesting patterns on the film from static electricty making sparks!

I'm just back from Chile and at dawn in the Atacama at 4,500m it was -12°C. No problems experienced with my K10D which had been kept warm going up and was in a bag between shots. I had made sure the battery was fully charged the night before.

I often use my K10D and K20D at temperatures much lower than that. Once the power is "on", just don't turn it "off". In winter time, I regularly use my cameras at -20. You have to be careful about condensation when you go back to a heated place...
