Photo Technique tested this lens in the late 1970s and were very complimentary. It has superb resolution and character and is reputed to be an outstanding lens.

Just found a link on here back to 2006 where someone bought one for £26 ! I just paid double that, so I hope it's really good and I wasn't done !?

Well I would quite like one, so if it's good I think £50 ish could well be worth it.

Given the steep rise in lens prices over the last six months, twice the 2006 price probably isn't unreasonable.
Let us all know what you think of it when you have had a chance to use it.

Lens arrived this morning ! It's heavy ! It only goes to f16 !?
It appears to have marks inside the front lens, not fungus (I hope!) but what appear to be green blemishes, more like smudges than fungus webs ! I'm hoping it's just the coating !? Nice to use (fully manual,of course) and very close focusing. Luckily I've got PRA working again, I find that indispensable ! Here's my first sample (1024 x 685) M3 screws + 1cm ruler (1/3s, f8, iso100) :

The higher the quality of a lens the more we will notice the fall off in performance past f16. Some makers stopped at f16 for their lenses, including Pentax until the bayonet lenses came along and stretched to f22.
In the days of your new lens, f22 was not generally considered to be a useful aperture because of diffraction.

Yes, and Pentax were applauded for putting f22 settings on the new lenses and at least giving photographers the option. Most others, bayonet or screw fit, were still stopping at f16.johnriley wrote:

According to Photo Technique at the time, the Vivitar is an exceptional macro lens.
