Replacing the hard drive will 'cure' your PC, but anything you copy from your old hard drive to your new one could re-infect you.
There's no definitive answer to which is the best anti-virus program. At the moment I like Rising AV, but there are at least half a dozen other similarly good ones.
If we're talking about your work computer (that you store your professional images on) I would call in a professional. A freelancer will charge you around £30-40 per hour for a callout. A shop might charge you double that for a callout (and will probably assign a spotty teenager to deal with it).

Anti virus progs are a matter of taste, I use Avira free which seems OK.
As for the virus living in your Ram, no it can't.
RAM is volatile, which means it loses any info when you turn off the machine.
The nasty can survive in your boot sector on your hard drive though!
I had to do a low level format last time I had a virus, don't ask how it's done it was that long ago...
Oh yes, Buttercup Syrup doesn't work on computers..

Try to get a Boot CD/DVD that has an AV scanner on it. I think Norton Ghost 15 has, but not sure if it has to be installed on another computer first. That way you can boot up from the CD and scan you HD and possibly remove the virus. I'm also sure that it will have a file manager that will let you copy any files to say an SDHC card or another empty drive.

Are you saying a virus can attach to a image??
I think what going to happen is this
Monday going to have a new hard drive fitted and new virus protection, after all that, have the new anti-virus soft ware scan my external hard drive for bugs and virus
I'm not that up on computers so i have not got a clue if I’m talking crap please tell me

I wouldn't replace the HDD.
Just make sure your current AV software is fully up to date and do a full scan. If it is decent AV software it should pick up any virus you have. When you are sure ( and only then ) that your main HDD is clean, plug in your external disk and re-run the AV software.
At least, that's how I sorted my last problem out.

I've never heard of a virus attached to a JPG but to be sure you can upload one to link and it will be scanned for free using about 20 top AV progs while you wait. Normally a virus has to be attached to a program that actually runs and a JPEG doesn't run.
Nasty stuff is beginning to happen with movie files when the Media Player contacts an external URL for licence info. The URL is embedded in the file and when contacted sends the nasties down the line.

Try booting up in safe mode, then run a virus check.

the virus soft ware was recomended by the computer shop and to date I've never had a promlem. only 11 days left on contract
last week for some reason my firewall was turned off?? not by me.

If you have too many security programs, they can start turning each other off. Spybot and Windows Defender for example do not comfortably co-exist.
To answer your question about memory, it will not hold a virus after it has been powered off.

I had a terrible infection a few months back and was about to reformat my hard drive but I found a very good web site that has geeks who will take your problem on board and see you through to a fix. I identified my problem (which is the first step) and then found a thread in their forum that dealt with a similar situation.
First get the latest Stinger program and run that which takes an age but can sometimes get the obvious. Then I'd suggest you download the test Kaspersky and run that. If you can't do that then get someone who can to download it onto a memory stick and try to install it. Then if that doesn't work try the demo Sophos which may work. But I expect your attack won't let you do this. I couldn't install anything or run any useful program.
I can't recall which the web site I used was but I'm asking a friend who will know. If you can hold out for a couple of days I expect either I or someone more expert will point you in the right direction.
It took me 4 days to resolve my problem on and off. I was not happy. While not perfect I use Norton AV 2010 and that does seem to offer a reasonable level of security.

I use AVG free edition with no problems.
Try running CCleaner, its a free system cleanup program and will delete all sorts of rubbish.
It could also be Malware that's causing the problem, I've forgotten the name of the prog I used last time I came across this problem, but I did not re-format the hard disk, and every thing worked OK after all the sorting out.
It's not a quick process using the programs but it does save on having to reload all your software after a re-format.

If this is a Windows PC I recommend Malwarebytes as a clean-up tool. It is available as a free download here. I have been using this in preference over spybot for a while now. Remember though that this is just a clean-up tool and you still need a decent virus protection application. I'm using Avast having recently upgraded it to version 5.

I can't restore my computer and it keeps on crashing
and now goggle chrome is failing to load up
I first noticed it the other day when the mouse stopped working and had to restart my computer and now it's getting worse
Typical as my anti-virus runs out in 11 day's
So here are my main questions
if I replace the internal hard drive and start from scratch will the virus or worm be on or affecting my RAM
Second question
As my anti-virus is up for renewal what is the best on the market, I'm currently using bullgard
