I managed to get on window critical up date and a up date for xp was found be it failed to up load (three times)

I remember now this all happened 10 day shy of a year ago because I bought bullgard then I had a new hard drive because the old one failed and had to be replaced.

50% of the dater was retrieved and put in a folder on my new hard drive.
Could it be time released to infest my computer again 12 monts later??

I was using McAfee last time and was bit so mcAfee is a no go but thank you anyway

James - I have many prejudices as well but I think you need to put some aside here and try Stinger from macAfee which can loaded onto a memory stick and run from there. It may do something and then get some decent modern mainstream AV software from MacAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, Soiphos or the others mentioned. But I'll bet they won't fix it although they may identify it. Trial versions only and I found Kaspersky to be good although Sophos found stuff that didn't. Lots of installing and uninstalling!

I fear you'll need a second PC to download the SPYBOT stuff, hijackthis, com something or other and they will beat the virus/trojan to death in the end.

You may find (as I did) you cannot install new software but can run some programs that don't require installation just a simple file copy.

Try installing and using the recovery console in XP link my attack thoughtfully disabled this and it's worth knowing if this is the case with you as well.

You did say you didn't want to do any work today didn't you?

James you may need to disable your current AV program to run an on line scanner.

That seems to be the case with the Kaspersky one here

Mike I have a second computer a laptop so I think I'm going to back up my computer to my external hard drive and buy a scrubber program and start again and then buy Kaspersky and scan the external hard drive for virus's

How dose that sound

Its a good job all my programs are originals with one exception light room but I don't really use it so I’m covered it's just some of my passwords are saved on my computer and not written down but I have the most important one written down #Pentax user#

Just note that this only detects ports that are open at that time.
No self-respecting piece of malware will keep its ports open 24 hours a day for casual inspection and detection.

Options are:
- open the port only on a as-needed basis
- use port 80 (HTTP used by accessing web pages) to hide itself with web page traffic
- use a method known as "port-knocking" -- only after a series of unopened ports are accessed in a specific order/time will the malware respond. To everyone else, the ports appear closed.

I don't mean to belittle GRCs site, it is a wealth of information and does a great job in many areas, but like anything else it is simply one of many tools that may be used to help determine how secure your machine or network might be.


It is sad... no one should have to know all this stuff just to do every day work and recreation on a home computer. No matter your job, you almost have to be a one-man IT department at home.

microsoft security essentials is now performing a deep scan will let you know the outcome

if it finds no threat dose that mean i'm free of virus's ??

possibly yes [ remember I don't use PCs ] but there is still the possibility of Malware - so that needs to be checked

It's almost immaterial if it says you are free of any virus and your PC still doesn't work correctly

What matters is getting the PC back to life and this seems a good first step.

ok going to stop the deep scan and just get on with scrubbing and reloading all my programs

Gareth is right. Let the tool run its course. It will far better to identify and remedy the problem than just backup data, fit new disc and restore possibly infected data.

That said you are looking at slow processes that will take hours to complete.

Stick with it and you will win!

Yep I do have trouble deep scan is still going on but this message has come up

Just bought two new programmes from pc world

Drive scrubber for up to 3 users £24.99
Kaspersky Internet security 2010 complete protection for three users includes tune-up utilities and lifetime license for £49.99 but when I went to pay for it, it was only £24.99. I even challenged the price saying but it's £49.99 then kicked my self but it was ok that was the price I don’t know if it’s stupid or honesty but that’s just me.

So only two question.

I install the new internet security and back up to a external hard drive and then scrub my computer and reinstall the internet security then scan the external hard drive and reinstall my information is that right ?

Second question

When I’ve reinstalled my Internet security is that then two users??

Please advice me, did tell you I was dim when it come to this sort of thing.

Never back up to reinstall before also never installed a back up yet

No they can mean 3 computers or 3 different IP address but not 3 installs.
